I’m thinking about studying and getting my technician license. Are there any online study guides that are free and also what’s a good place to take an online exam when I am ready?

The VECs should have information on their web sites about online testing.

I don't keep up with online study sources so I can't help much with that. I would check these.

As for taking the exam, I booked a zoom session with my local group.

Hamstudy is the absolute GOAT, I studied for ~2 days and I managed to get 33/35 on the technician. They asked if I wanted to try out the general but since their time zone is different from mines I decided to let them sleep.

If youre looking to do an online exam Hamstudy will also show you and majority of the times its over Zoom with a cost from 0-15 bucks.

I am a fan of KB6NU's study guide and his take on presenting the questions and answers as statements. Constantly being exposed to the wrong answers when studying multiple guess style can lead to misremembering one of the wrongs.

I always recommend Dave Casler's (KE0OG) technician license course on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuapIzKwhZN_30dcgsDbGU3J7C8BAYJcG). Dave's course is aligned with the ARRL printed license manual.

Dave also has Ham Radio Answers with a multitude of videos on ham radio and a live YouTube chat on Saturdays.
