Well there is a page on how the DPS operate there State Wide VHF system. All in the Texas Database, there are also many other small vhf and uhf depts around Bexar county that you can monitor on your scanner.

In Comal county DPS works off of the sheriff's radio system. They use the DPS frequencies primarily for chit chat or if the sheriff's computer is down to run tags/persons. But traffic stops and dispatches come from the SO system.

SA DPS office does pretty good. Make sure you add in the Inter-City freqs for them also, they hide out on those channels every once in a while for BS chatter.

You might want to consider, if you haven't done so already, punching in some of the other agencies in the area into your scanner, Balcones Hgts, Alamo Hgts, Hollywood Park, Shavano Park, Windcrest, Kirby etc, etc.....

Makes for some intresting listening sometimes.

Also having that digiscanner is a plus as DPS is slowly converting thier comms to APCO-25 digital. :)

Can't seem to find what system DPS is using?? At least it is not printed out in the open form where I have been looking... I am going to try to load some of the DPS stuff - but I will admit I am doing this blind... I am shrap with computers but have no clue what do do with things like the tone PL and other stuff..

question of the DPS freq list.. what is the deal when you click on one of the freq. licenses - it brings up another page with a long list of more freq ??.. I am just to use the freq. listed on the front page correct??

Whats the deal with some of the freq. having a diff. input freq. ??? anything I should know about this???

Do I need to do anything with the Tone PL ??

Just to keep it basic and simple. You won't need to worry about PL tones for your scanner. DPS in the SA area is not using repeaters at this time. They normally use the repeaters during special times/ events to prevent cross-talk with other units.

You can program in the following, even though you might not hear anything or they might not always be in use.

154.680
155.460
154.950
155.370
154.695
155.445
159.210

Local dispatcher call sign is "San Antonio" If you are close to the Medical Center area, or I-10/ I 410 you will hear the dispatch center okay. You might not hear the mobile unit because again they are usually non-repeated.

Hope this helps.

ok thanks -

But I still don't know what type system the first DPS freq list is using.. Motorola Type 1, 2, type2 900 mhz, VHF, UHF. etc...

If I was two program the whole first list.. would I use the diff input freqs??

whats the offset ch. for on the spreadsheet under BAse/space/offset??

Okay. Like I said before, we'll make it simple. As far as your scanner is concerned, the frequencies I gave you is all you will need to put in to monitor DPS in the SA area. there might be more than I don't know about, but this will get you started. You won't have to input anything else.

The offsets, PL's, etc... primarily are for conventional radios. Not for scanners.

Also understand......DPS uses CONVENTIONAL channels...not trunking. When you program the freqs in one of the first choices is "Trunking or Conventional." Make sure you use Conventional and it will not ask the trunking questions.

DPS is establishing a VHF APCO digital MOT Type II system statewide, and they have already implemented it in some parts of the state, so in his area, he may have it trunked.

That is wrong. The DPS is only changing to P25 digital modulation.
They are still conventional, NOT TRUNKED.

In a few places they use OTHER city or county 800 MHz trunked systems,
which should not be confused with the DPS's own VHF conventional system.

You can actually program in PL's in the newer scanners? That is something new for me. PL's/ DPL's are ususally programmed into conventional radios.

The San Antonio are DPS has NOT made the transistion over to the APCO25 VHF trunking system. I listened to local troopers on my FD portable all afternoon pulling people over.

Yup, I think the Pro-2006 can with an Opto something board, and the Pro-92, Pro-96 along with the upcomeing Pro-97 can out of the box along with the Unidens: BC 250/780/785 BC 296/796 and the new BC 246 along with the upcomeing BC 396.

You're right, for some reason I thought they were going to trunked.

I know this because I live in Houston.

on the north side of San antonio you can listen the the New Braunfals relay on 159.210 which re-brodcast the austin dispatcher and every once and a while the units. Lately San Antonio troopers and dispatch have been re-broadcasting on it also. the pl is 107.2

So far as I know, DPS Region 4 (El Paso to San Angelo (includes Pecos, Midland, and Abilene)) is the only region that has switched to APCO-25 digital. You can still hear them on analog talking to their respective counties occasionally. If I had to guess, I would say Region 5 is next (Amarillo, Lubbock, Childress, etc..). If you wanted to listen in these areas, you would probably want to go ahead with a digital scanner.

O.M.G.! That was supposed to be such a simple answer, So why all the complications?

DPS-01-Mobiles (to Mobile or 155.4600) PL: 162.2 154.6800
DPS-02-Primary-A PL: 162.2 155.4600
DPS-03-Intercity Mobile (to Mobile or 155.3700) NO PL 154.9500
DPS-04-Intercity Base NO PL 155.3700
DPS-05-Criminal Law Enforcement PL: 162.2 155.5050
DPS-06-CLE Mobile Input PL: 162.2 154.9200
DPS-07-PRIMARY-B (and Mobile to mobile) PL: 162.2 155.4450
DPS-08-Mobile Input to: 155.4450 PL: 162.2 154.6950
DPS-09-Statewide Mobiles PL: 162.2 154.6650
DPS-10-Statewide Mobiles PL: 162.2 159.2100
DPS-11-TLE-REPEATER PL: 107.2 159.2100
DPS-12-TLE-REPEATER PL: 110.9 159.2100
DPS-13-TLE-REPEATER PL: 118.8 159.2100
DPS-14-TLE-REPEATER PL: 123.0 159.2100
DPS-15-TLE-REPEATER PL: 127.3 159.2100
DPS-16-TLE-REPEATER PL: 136.5 159.2100
DPS-17-TLE-REPEATER PL: 141.3 159.2100
DPS-18-TLE-REPEATER PL: 146.2 159.2100
DPS-19-TLE-REPEATER PL: 151.4 159.2100
DPS-20-TLE-NATIONAL POLICE EMERGENCY PL: 162.2 155.4750
DPS NARCOTICS 159.0900 PL: 162.2 Repeater
DPS NARCOTICS 154.9350 PL: 162.2 Mobiles
DPS LICENSE & WEIGHT OFFICERS (Dodge Trucks) 156.2100 PL: 162.2

Not very Complicated! DPS May used another Agencies Trunked System if Assigned to their Specific County for Support or Accident Investigations. DPS have Direct Access to Any Agency in the State of Texas on VHF and almost any agency on UHF. DPS Uses NPSPAC 800Mhz Mutual Aid Channels which are being implimented into ALL 800Mhz user Agencies.

DPS Uses REPEATER Yes, even in San Antonio, But they operate them in Half Duplex Mode or CLOSED MODE so they don't have to hear the rest of the Noisy state. In the event of an emergency or the Like the Dispatcher has the ability to "Open" The repeater to Full Duplex or 3-way. Most DPS TLE Repeaters always operate in OPEN Mode.
