Only half joking, but if the presence of a functioning HEAR radio in the ER was tied to financial reimbursement (Medicare reimbursement)) the situation would be completely different.
I think most of the people who posted above are veterans of EMS and the comments are spot on, the situation with the lack of hospitals answering the HEAR system is hard to explain but started many years ago. It is a potentially a fantastic resource, especially if as stated we see the currently popular consumer cell network fail, apparently a distinct possibility that is lost on the hospitals.
