Since some announcements come by from time to time about scanner meetings in various spots, I thought I'd take the time to mention something that will be happening this March.

NASWA - the North American SW Association - hosts a gathering of the hobby folk in Kulpsville Pa. (about 1/2 hour from Philly) every year - this is the 20th anniversary. The exact dates are March 8-10, which is a slight change from previous years. Normally it's a 2 day event (with Sunday being departure day) but this year, it starts on a Thursday.

While much of the Fest (as it's come to be known over the years) have forums that cover HF topics - in past years, everything from broadcasting, utilities, pirates has been covered - there are usually more than a few devoted to other parts of the hobby including satellites, Scanners , antique radio and history, antenna design and other topics as well.

This is quite literally a worldwide event - in past years, the Fest has had participants from as far away as Sri Lanka, Japan, China (both of them) and Russia. European broadcasters are almost always in attendance, and folks from the VoA are also there (if you check the photos, and look very carefully, you'll see me in some of them....if one knows where to look, hi).

Information on what will be covered in the Fest this year is just now beginning to get set up - keep an eye on...

for other news (there's a blog available as well). It's to your advantage to register early to avoid the rush. One thing that's important - the hotel accomodations are seperate from the fest registration. You must mention the 'Winter SWL Fest' when you call the Holiday Inn at Towamencin to get the Fest rate. It's wise to do this early, as the hotel can get booked very quickly, and there aren't that many other hotels in the area.

I'll be mentioning this again when there's more news as the date gets closer. One gentleman who has been invited to attend the Fest is Arnie Coro CO2KK. Unfortunately due to diplomatic snafus at the State Department, it's been a pain to try to get him cleared. Hopefully the Fest managers will have better luck this year. Personally I'd like to meet and talk with him, as he's got a beautiful Heathkit shack that would be the envy of any collector.

I'll be there on Friday (I have work commitments on Thursday). Hopefully I'll see some of the RR faithful there.

man, if they'd just make this the week after Dayton, I think I'd have the Radio Nerd Roadtrip set in stone.

Still, tempted to hit this up!

Last update of the page was January 17th, and the title is for the 20th anniversary - but yeah, the webpage hasn't been updated yet with any new information beyond the registration form.
Patience - it will get there, particularly by mid-Feb when things can really get rolling.

Hello,

This will be my 17th or 18th fest. I missed the infamous first one and I think one or two others because I was sick. I went for just a day one year because I had other commitments. This 20th year is special and an extra day was added.

The BADX crew from Boston joins up with the SH crew from Montreal. We have a great time. The time really goes fast.

The fest has some interesting talks and is great for meeting people. There is usually only one vendor, a few radio stations, a few groups, and some demos so it is not really a commercial venue.

There are also some good radio monitoring opportunities in the area. I usually take an extra day or two to do some VHF/UHF monitoring.

Just a quick update or two - Rich Cuff has opened up the Fest Blog with the updated list of forums at:

http://swlfest.blogspot.com/

That would be the place to check for updates - last update was early this week.

Our own Mark Meece has posted a .p96 file for the fest area - I sent him a note asking whether he would dump that file into a CSV format so others can use it (Win96 can do this), but I haven't heard back from him. The file can be found at the bottom of:

http://www.scannerscum.com/kulpsville/files.html

Since there are several other digital capable Uniden scanners out there, I'd encourage folks to build their files and possibly post them here in .zip format (last time I looked, that was an allowed format, at any rate).

CU at the fest in just under 3 weeks or so...73s Mike

It appears that Mark read my note - he now has Win97 and CSV files posted on the Scanner Scum page listed above. The CSV files can be imported into many different applications, such as the BuTel programs, Scan Control and others.

Thanx Mark! CU and others at the Fest next week. 73s Mike

Hi Mike:

I'd love to make that but lack of prior planning and being on call this weekend = a big no. I am making plans to go to the ADW open house in May (never been but have wanted to). Do you guys go to that? Tinear and Citation et.al.

I'll see if I can get up with you guys on the MilAir forum.
