Looking to upgrade from my 245XLT to a digital model...

I've narrowed down some choices:

1. Uniden BC796D
2. Uniden BC296D
3. Uniden BCD-396T (due to be released)
4. Go with another manufacturer like Icom...

I’m looking for a digital scanner to cover the trunking bands, civil and military aircraft bands. The RS 2096 just won't cut it... a lot of gaps in freq coverage.

Any thoughts, ideas, comments, questions???

Thanks in advance.

It depends on a lot of variables. Think about the following,

How much digital is there in your area or where you travel to frequently?
What type of digital trunking systems are you going to listen to?
How long do you usually keep a scanner?
Do you plan to manually or computer program the scanner?
Do you have more use for a mobile or portable scanner?

I have a 296D, but I plan to get a 396 when it comes out. I don't have any 9600 baud trunking systems in my area, but I like to take a scanner when I travel and I've traveled to a number of areas that have that type of system. If I didn't travel much, the dynamic would be different.

You've already ruled out RS. I don't know if Icom makes anything even remotely capable of doing what the Unidens do.

You DO know the MilAir can be restored in the (20)96, right?

That said, I would wait for the BCD396T if you want a portable. It will have many advantages over the BC296D.

The BC246T is a good replacement for the BC245XLT if you don't need digital.

Never knew. What's involed and how much does it open it up?

Lots of digital and more on the way... More digital where I frequent out west! I've gone thru about 3 scanners in roughly 10 years??? I will be using TrunkStar to program. I'm always worried about losing quality going with a portable. How does the 296D rate to big brother the 796D? But the short answer is I prefer a portable.

Any new news on the 396T from Uniden?

Using Win96 software to program the radio and checking a box.

One of the things you have to consider if you travel is the availability of keeping 11 differnt entire scanner setups on the radio, able to change one setup to another in about 20-30 seconds without hooking up to a computer. That is the advantage of V-Folders on the Pro-96/2096. Of course you have to load what you want in the V-Folders, but that is what they are there for.

CC mode trunking on the Pro series radios is way easier to implement than on the Uniden models, as it is the only way they work! You can also put more than one site of a multi-site system (Moto of course) in one bank and it will scan all that it can hear (no locking on one CC, no skipping CC's). Before you commit to the Uniden, you should carefully again look at the Pro-96/2096 radios. Just so you know I own both and like my 796D for what I use it for (logging & recording), but my Pro-96 is way more versatile and easier to use for normal scanning. The Pro series doesn't have some of the other things that the Unidens do have, like LTR, WFM, EDACS narrow or SCAT. But for the majority of scanner listeners, especially those that travel, I think the Pro-96/2096 is a better deal.

I'll be using mine to log & record... any problems thus far? What software are you using? I'm using Scanrec with my current 245XLT with no problems.

I use IDTracker which allows me to filter what I hear based on the data it builds up on the computer. In other words, I can just get new data or freq's/TG's which I consider Priority while ignoring the ones I have already ID'd. Pretty nice piece of freeware, check it out.
