Morning all,

I've gone digital everywhere else so I guess it's about time to try with scanning. I want to scan three counties primarily, Lee, Macon and Chambers with the odd side trip into Elmore. I'm pretty capable technically but would much prefer something I can simply punch in a zip code and listening range and just go. I've read about several including the Home Patrol of course and the BCD 496XT (I think I have that correct) as well as others. I've narrowed down my requirements to something that is portable which leaves out the HP. I'd prefer to use AA throwaways but can also be happy with rechargeable as long as I can get 4-6 hours of use per charge. Simple to use as outlined, I don't want to be putting in talkgroups and so on. Complex programming is going to result in a shelf queen. Price around $400. I'd like something with a current database that will include recent rebanding in the above counties. It needs to work as advertised and not be something where many of the features are not yet released. Database upgrades need to be relatively easy to download. To my knowledge only the city of Opelika has gone almost completely digital while all the county systems as well as Auburn, Tuskegee and others are still analog with no plans for change. So what scanner am I looking for within these guidelines? I can spend a bit more but would prefer to stay close to $400. The rest are pretty firm requirements. Thanks for any guidance, this is something I'd like to do in the next few weeks.

Since you're wanting to just punch in a zip code and range, then that pretty much locks you into the Uniden 436HP. I think analyze is the only feature not yet implemented for the 436's... the siren app/wifi is for the 536's only.

I'm not really familiar with the Whistler WS1080, but while it would also receive digital, I don't think it has the ability to just punch in a zip code and go.

Is there something else available that involves some programming but does not require an advanced degree in it? I'm not sure what Siren is but don't foresee a need for wifi. I'm looking for something as reliable as the analog units I now use but not as difficult as the 346 I'm still trying to figure out. Anything that troublesome is not something I'd use.

Otis, I would recommend the Whistler 1080. It uses Zip codes to program the scanner. It comes with its own software, which is necessary when doing firmware and database updates. I currently have the GRE version, the PSR-800.
I would not recommend the x36HP scanners, as they are from $100-$200 more than the 1080 which is currently at $399.
The HP-2, which is coming out next month, is $130 more than the 1080.
If and when the state of Alabama goes Phase II digital, you will be ready to monitor.
It appears that Lee county is the only one so far on the new P-25 statewide system.
As always, I recommend that you visit the AL state forum for more informed updates to the statewide system.
HTH,
Larry

Program by zip

I also have a GRE 800. It can be set up by zip code, city, or county in addition to the traditional selection method. It is ready for phase II, and I find the organization easier to follow than my BCD396XT with quick keys. The V-Scanner folders give you more storage than you will ever use and are great to set up for traveling. The Whistler version has all of these features plus an upgrade for the firmware.

BTW, the Elmore County SO went NXDN digital and also (sadly) use encryption. The Elmore VFD has NXDN listed as one of their emission codes, but so far haven't gone digital. Right now, there isn't a scanner on the market that will demodulate NXDN digitial. I checked Opelika's system, and emission code shows P25 Phase I digital.

My PSR-500 has been acting up so i've been thinking about a replacement. My thought it to wait to see what the next generation in scanners that Whistler and Uniden come up with before buying a new one. So, unless you need one now, my advice would be to wait and see.
