Of course, folks will recommend that you try an external speaker, perhaps one that allows for bass and treble adjustments. Just curious--- is this a new radio or did you acquire it used? This is my first Whistler and I find the audio somewhat pleasing in both NBFM, DG, Dg and D2.

That's a new one. There are a lot of problems with the old rebranded GRE radios obviously, but one thing they always stood out for was excellent clarity and modulation IF they were able to decode.

In 2003 I bought both of the digital capable radios available. The GRE Pro 96 and the Uniden BC 250 d. One was clear as a bell on digital and the other was muffled and garbled. For those who don't know, the Pro 96 blew the doors off Uniden.

That generation grew up to be what is now the 1040 + 1065, basically introduced in 2007 by GRE. If you're lucky enough to be on an old type ll smartzone system they're terrific, after all these years. Simulcast?, not so much.

My TRX-2 has the best audio I've heard from a scanners internal speaker. It's a bit too much bass so it's the exact opposite to me, too much body and not enough "tinny" in the higher frequency range. Maybe your speaker are broken? Easily checked with an external speaker.

Scanner designers focus on functions and features when audio should be the most important thing to be able to clearly hear what a scanner are actually receiving. A bass and treble control in the setting are all that are needed to get the sound exactly to your own taste, that might be different to other peoples.

I am using a external speaker , it is not powered or have any bass or treble controls. i have another trx-2 that sounds great , but this one sounds tinny on the same frequencies / talk groups as the other . i was hoping there was a setting that could tone it down a bit .

Generally speaking a sound looses treble and gets more bassy when you use compression or AGC. Check to see how the AGC are used compared to the other scanner.

Have you swapped SD cards to see if the "Tinny" sound follows the card? If so, then you know its the something in the programming.
