I just started a new job in which they gave me a kenwood tk 2170 for communication. Currently when I turn it on, and when I transmit anything, the name from the previous employee who used the radio is displayed. How can I program it so that it will display my name? Nobody seems to know how or where the owners manuals are. Thanks in advance.

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Are you on a trunking system with the name being displayed on the dispatch console?
If so, then the dispatcher has to change the name showing up on the console in the alias database.

Yes, the radio is sending an id to the other radios and the dispatcher that says the emplyees name. So maybe I need to have the dispatcher change the name.

Had the wrong radio in mind when I sent this and then got interrupted before I could correct my statement.
You need the software that programs the radio to change the power on display.
As far as the ID being sent over the air, that should also be able to be changed with the same programming software.
Regardless of the signaling system, you only send out an ID number. The name is stored in the other radios (and dispatch) as an alias. You will need to reprogram all the other radio's "alias name" so that when your ID number is received they will show the correct name.
This is overcome in the new NXDN digital radios where the alias name is transmitted over the air and requires only your radio to re-programmed. Such is life....

Ramal is right... again. All of the radios on the system are decoding the ID number you are sending and then displaying the alias programmed in their radio's memory that corresponds to that ID number... which means it needs to be changed in the next round of reprogramming... in every radio. As far as what the radio displays for a second or two when your first turn it on... that is changed in your radio's programming. So, you're stuck with it the way it's working now until the next reprogram.
