TK-2170 Problems

I have a TK-2170 VHF that will not power on. I have tried multiple batteries and I can't get anything. I was programming it and I wrote the code plug and it cut off and now it is dead. Anybody know what could've happened? I really need this radio back in service.

Some times the volume control-on/off switch mounting nut gets loose and this causes the flex circuit to break.

I've checked that and it doesn't seem loose. I've opened the case and nothing looks damaged.

Check the battery with a multimeter to be sure it's good. There are internal electronics inside the battery.

There is an internal fuse, F901, but it's pretty small. Replacement, if that is the issue, isn't easy and not something you'd want to tackle unless you had the soldering skills necessary to work on the SMT components inside these radios.

If the battery checks out and you determine it is the radio, you could send it off for repair, but I suspect you could pick up a used radio easier and cheaper than trying to get this one fixed.

Radio shop bench time is running about $85/hr out this way. Should not take long for a good tech to figure out what's wrong. If it is the fuse, you'd be looking at an hour of bench time. If it was more, you'd be looking at an hour of bench time, plus parts, plus more time to swap them out and realign the radio.

Looking at e-Bay, you can score a new TK-2170 for $120 - $150.

Decision time.
