• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have this radio installed, and I’m using it as a scanner for railroad frequencies. So far, it has been great. However, I noticed today that it is not putting out any audio. No beeps, no audio when a transmission is received, nothing. Scanning finds frequencies and the green light activates when something is received. Again, though, no actual audio from the speaker. I did not change any settings. It is the fuse directly to the battery and I have the additional Block inside the passenger cabin. Is this Electric? Should I recheck my programming? Where should I look?

Does it play the power-on sound? Does it beep in response to any front-panel keys (e.g. volume up/down)? Find some other troubleshooting here: TK-8180 No Audio

Negative on both answers. Earlier today was working fine. I turned the power off while in the car because I was talking to my daughter, and when it’s powered back on at the next car start, I got no power on beep or any volume beeps. It’s like the speaker is dead or some programming got off whack.

OK, this is weird. After leaving it on for a while I heard a little pop from the speaker and now everything works again. I’m wondering if there is a loose connection in there somewhere.

Try an external speaker plugged in to the rear 1/8" jack. That'll eliminate the front speaker/flex cable. It'll tell you if the audio amp is working and if it's programmed correctly.

Unlikely that's a programming issue unless you did something with the on hook decode.

Actually, strike that. Once I pulled the front cover off, it was apparent which ribbon cable. I was making it more complicated by taking the top cover off.

However, the problem persists. I wound up reloading the firmware just out of curiosity and during that process, the speaker worked a few times. I have noticed now that when I press the power button, I get a speaker noise, but no display. I have to hold the power button a little bit longer to get the unit to actually turn on.

This seems like maybe a short? Bad control head?
