When I program either the A or B channel and enter it into a channel, it programs both A and B with the same repeater information in the same memory slot. I can't program just the A channel. It wipes out the information in the B channel and duplicates information. I'm doing this manually, not with a programming cable.

How can I make the channels independent of each other or is there a problem with the radio? I've looked at every you tube video and gone through step by step with the manual..
Thanks in advance

Not sure if I understand your question. But it sounds like you only saved only 1 channel (1 Frequency) into the radio. That's why it's only displaying on both sides of the radio when you are in memory mode.

Tips.. Make sure that when you save the frequency you write down on a piece paper which channel number you are saving on. That way you won't overwrite your last entry.

Try this exercise for you to learn how to program it manually...

Save 444.200 ONLY on channel 5. DO NOT ADD any other information.

Save 444.210 only on channel 6. DO NOT ADD any other information.

Then switch to memory mode. Do you see those 2 channels you you just created in the memory bank? If so, then start playing with the other features ie.. Adding name, off set, pl tone etc. If you don't see the frequencies you just created, I would get on YouTube and see and follow how others save frequencies.

Good Luck my friend!

Memory #3 is #3 for the whole radio, not just one side.

To expand on this... Memory #3 can be DISPLAYED and used on BOTH sides of front face. (not really sure why you would want to do this, but whatever.. It would be easier to just turn off 1 of the sides... Left or Right)

Can I program channel 1 on the A side as a vhf frequency and channel 1 on the B side as a UHF frequency?

No. There is one memory space of 1000 channels which are accessible by both "sides" of the radio. What you program into memory #1 on the A side will appear as memory #1 on the B side and vice versa.

Thanks
It was driving me nuts!
Bit of a downside I suppose. my old Icom 2410H would let me program each vfo, differently on the same channel, but there a whole bunch of features the V71 has that make up for it, like 1000 channels..so no problem really..

Appreciate all the help

That's one of the drawbacks of the TM-V71A. The earlier TM-V7A would allow us to 'split' the memories between A and B, such that the two were totally independent of one another.

Sadly, although my TM-V7A still works fantastically well, the stupid blue/white screen died many years ago...

I really do like my TM-V71A a lot otherwise.

The mem is subdivided by 0-99, 100-199 etc. You can separate different repeater(I do it by geography). These can be scanned as a group(100) or as a whole(1000). groups can be linked buy the songle group of 100 is more than sufficient for my use and only one button to push to scan, you just have to be on a chane in the group. You can also have the same repeater in more than one group or mem slot. Priority repeaters can be programed everyy 4 or 5 slots to have a better chance of not missing the beginning of a transmission. Read the book real close. This radio can do a lot for you.

And each side is like having a separate radio installed. And you only need to remember one set of channel programming. I frequently keep one side on my home repeater with the other side scanning the other repeaters I can get in from my home area.

To expand on this.. Yes you can see it like that if you want... But in reality it's a dual band radio. Therfore you can put whatever combination you want on the screen.... As long as it's in the memory or a direct entry (not in memory, to not confuse you we'll work with Memory only) ...

Examples

UHF UHF
UHF VHF
VHF VHF
VHF VHF

Plus you can do 800 mhz on the right side only if I'm correct ( don't remember off the top of my head if it's left or right). You can RX ONLY!!

On the left side you can also RX ONLY airband

You're over thinking it.. It's extremely simple...

Just get into your mind frame that you have 1000 memory slots to use.. Those slots can be any combination you want.

Since you don't have the cable to program, I would suggest doing the mars mod first as it'll delete whatever you inputted into the radio. Once you decide to buy the cable, which is available on eBay then you're set. The free kenwood software works really well. You don't need to get anything else.. Don't bother with Chirp software on this radio.

I also do the same thing that Frank mentioned... I keep my left side on a set frequency in memory of course and then I have a select number of frequencies I scan on the right side. Remember you can easily go into the menu and "lock out" what you don't want to scan. So I'm scanning about 10 slots at a time.
