You do know that Terry Nichols had several scanners in his possesion when arrrested for the Oklahoma bombings, don't you?
He wasn't a suicide bomber. He didn't blow himself up with his victims. I wish he had. Would have saved us all the expense of dealing with him. I'm not intending to be flip when I write that my comment was strictly limited to "suicide bombers", not all "terrorists" in general (the later being a huge practically undefinable catagory).

I'm also pretty sure that the boys on 9/11 had more than a passing interest in aircraft radios and frequencies, especially since they knew how to turn off the transponders in the planes and knew how to monitor both the FAA and company radio channels based on their behavior.
They didn't learn how to fly jet aircraft by listening to scanners. Not even close. They trained extensively at a commercial flight school to gain this knowlege, not used scanners to obtain it. They used regular onboard civil aviation radios both in training and on the aircraft they hijacked, not scanners. (And in the end they didn't do and didn't need to do a whole bunch of ATC communications.) Commercial flight school security is a little better these days (we hope).

Take these considerations with the knowledge that the WiFi card is a common consumer product compared to a spooky government radio.
Compare any state of the art consumer product to a state of the art gov/military product (imaging satellites/performance jets/spacecraft/databases) and you can begin to imagine the possibilities.

1) Physics is Physics, all the money in the world does not change that.

2) You can IMAGINE lots things, some may be POSSIBILITIES, but many more are just IMPOSSIBILITIES!

If the gov has such great technology then why are our special forces guys running around with de-tuned FRS equipment, and are pleased as pie when their families send them full power FRS radios?

The truly spooky agencies doing the truly secret work don't use regular radios. There's some wild technology out there with specs you wouldn't believe.

If this stuff is so secret, how is it that YOU know about it? Just a question. 8)

Look at my sig and then listen to what I say.

Some of our boys over there are tickled pink when they get a full power frs radio this is true. They are also not the boys (and Girls I should say) thatwould be expected to need the more powerfull more discreet comm gear.

I know for a fact that during my time we had comms that were extremely rugged and had unbeleivable range. Unfortunatly at that time I wansnt into radios so I didnt really care as long as it kept me in touch with my spotter I was fine with whatever the hell it was.

I can tell you a good rifle beats a good radio any day. But a good radio beats smoke signals too.

Yes there are government produced radios with better specs then what we can hope for.
Are we ever going to see them. Sure. As soon as much better ones are produced and these ones are obsolete.
Same as with the SR71 blackbird. No one knew about it till there was a replacement. Now we all know about the Stealth but now that we know we can surmise (because of the governments past actions) that there is an operable and in flight stealth recon plane that we know nothing about yet.

Its the way our government runs.

You DO NOT want to know everything they do. You would not be able to sleep at night.

Sat what you want.

The limits of radio technology are well understood.

There are more commercial $$ chassing the next advancement than there are millitary $$.

Sure the military has stealth, only because there is not commercail use for it.

The SR-71 went away not because it was replaced by a new plane, but because it was replaced by Satelites.

Almost all military aircraft will be "Low Observable" (stealth) that is just teh evolutiona of the breed, but the F117 did not go public because it was replaced, only because it crashed so much.

Back to radio, I am sure your old radios had plenty of range for the mission, but if you did not know much about them, then you have no way to know how they got the range. Don't worry though, it was plain ordinary technology. Nothing too special.

The SR-71 "Blackbird was replaced by an updated version of the U-2, in conjunction with the SatNet and other Elint systems. Nothing replaces Humint for the best observations.... be it MOG, or HAOF, or even LAHSP, its still a human source of intel data. Combined with Elint sources,.. this is how our intelligence gathering works. And yes there are some very high tech PCD's with amazingly high range for a low power device... No you can't read about actual tech/specs in use in the open, and if anyone posts actual info on the stuff.. I personally hope you sit in a cell for a LONG time. So with that siad... I think its time for everyone to just get over it.

I hope they don't run out of di-lithium crystals!

Modulation theory is well known. There is no magic.
CDMA, OFDM, and UWB are all in the public domain.

:) Hey! Elint is a classified word. Don't let DIA catch ya using it in public. At least that is what I was taught back in my NSA days.

Can't wait till I get asked what the other terms mean.. maybe the MIB's will arrest us all for having common sense.....

And the following terms were declassified in the 80's-
ELINT, HUMINT, COMINT, INTSECU, and the "origingal" WorldCom AKA the "Red Line", aka "Da Nuke Phone", aka "da Hot Line"...

WEG

You can safely say "Wet Ops", "Black Ops", and use the term Deniable Plausibility.....

Does that mean I don't need permission to travel to the USSR )

There is no USSR. It was disbanded and the Republics became individual countries.\
