I am currently listening to my local airport (KAVP) and I have two scanners going. On one of my scanners will stop on 120.1, which is supposed to be KAVP tower and the other scanner will stop on 121.9, which is supposed to be KAVP ground. Now both channels will have the same audio, and the scanners will do vice versa and again same audio. Now it doesnt do it all the time but every so often it will. Maybe someone from Northeast PA can chime in and let me know if they get the same thing. But is there a way and/or a reason that they would simulcast the same comms on the two frequencies on some occassions?

Yup, its not busy enough for 2 seperate controlers on each freq. or maybe one went to the bathroom ;)

I know around me Sault Ste. Marie Ontario does the same thing. I just lockout the ground freq. because of this.

Same here at Charlottesville (CHO). Once in a while they will split when it gets busy like Fridays before a big football game or graduation.

Interestingly, the local aerodrome I fly at here in South-Western Sydney, Camden Aerodrome (YSCN) uses those same two freqs for the same things - 120.1 Tower and 121.9 Ground. Whenever the tower is active the two channels are linked together and work exactly as you describe.

Its basically done because its not busy enough to justify having a dedicated controller for the ground work.

Cheers,
Matt

at most class C (podunk) or smaller airports, tower and ground are often combined or are atleast worked by the same controller transmitting over both freqs. after hours.

Midway airport in Chicago does this during overnight hours. Tower, Ground and Clearance are all handled by one controller...

I've also heard the ground (AM) and AFNG Fire/EMS (FM) simulcast at a local (former AFB) that still has AFNG and USCG units at the airport.

another reason this is done is because there is only one controller, it lets aircraft on ground know if he's talking on tower freq (and vice versa) which reduces the number of blocked calls.

hi if you still listen to KAVP ATC you should get in contact with Liveatc.net and stream the live atc on the computer for people like me to listen to their home airport.
thanks.
