Hi,

I am curious about the behaviour of the towers in the Toronto Public Safety trunking system.

Somewhere I got the impression that all activity is broadcast/repeated on all towers, but my experience seems different.

For example if someone in 43 Division were to transmit to the East tower should that be rebroadcast on either the North, South or even West towers?

Toronto's system is not simulcast as you've found.

A talkgroup will only be repeated if a radio is affiliated to that talkgroup on that site.

If a radio on the east tower transmits on 43 Division, it will only be rebroadcast from the sites that have radios on them affiliated to 43 Division.

Why tie up a channel on the west tower with 43 Division comm's if they're aren't any radios listening to 43 Division on the west tower?

TPS could always restrict certain talk groups to certain towers as well.

The firehall radios might only have the south tower in them so the TFS dispatch groups might be restricted to the south tower only.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

Mike

Thanks. That stands to reason.

Something else I have noticed is the frequency that transmissions are completely missed on my scanner compared to a commercial radio monitoring the same TG.

I can miss an entire conversation that is received by a commercial radio sitting next to me.

Scanners are horrible for missed conversations. IE, they false decode (or don't decode) fairly often.

What I find interesting is that I seemed to notice less of it on my old PRO95 than the Uniden.

I think that there is going to be some Batgear in my future. :)
