I used to spend a lot of time running Train Dispatcher. It's just what it says, a dispatcher simulator. You control a particular territory and it's your job to give trains clearance to get through your territory. I used to get lost for hours in the CSX Cincinnati Terminal territory. The realism is dependent on how carefully the particular territory that you are running was crafted.

A guy at work is a big fan of Microsoft's Train Simulator. It's more of a cab ride along a particular route simulator. The realism is that you have to manipulate the throttle and the brakes to properly handle your train. Run through a signal or a switch that's against you and you could find yourself running into an oncoming train. MSTS is out of production now, but there seems to be a large user community.

I picked up a copy of Train Simulator at Staples for something like $10 a couple of years ago, I upgraded to TD 3 last year, running trains before they go dead on the law is a challege.

Try Trainz Railroad Simulator 2004. It's pretty cool and they have a website where you can download all kinds of different engines, rolling stock, scenery, routes, scenarios, etc. It's really cool. You can even make your own railroad(route). There's a website called Trainz pro routes that have modeled real railroad routes like the Techapi loop. There's even a set up you can buy that's like a real cab control with throttle and brake levers and buttons for the horn and so on. In my opinion, it's a lot easier to use than Microsoft train simulator.

Well this really isn't radio related but I'm a HUGE fan of MSTS (Microsoft Train Simulator) . I've spent hundreds of hours loading add-ons and such. Two days ago, Microsoft announced that it will be coming out with a new version of Train Simulator.

There are a few threads on www.train-sim.com with more info on this. Some of the developers of the new sim also post on that site.

At the hairdresser's, past the liquor store.
Is there any kind of simulator on line that allows for interaction with other "dispatchers?"

Wouldn't it be a hoot if we could link coast to coast and run a train all the way from the Pacific to the Atlantic (or vice versa)? Depending on how many participants there were, each dispatcher could hand the train off to the next one at predetermined points. The route and consist would be determined by participant location.

I run Microsoft Train Simulator and Train Dispatcher 3.
Even though it's an "orphan," there is a very large community that provides payware and freeware add-ons for MSTS. In addition to Train-Sim, try searching for 3DTrains, 3dTrainSim, Maple Leaf Tracks, DieselsWest, and Streamlines to name a few...

I'm Running MSTS With many extra downloaded engine/car profiles and the actual "Physical" Desktop train controls (I think locotrol or auran makes it...got it at NMRA '06 in Phili when i worked security there).

Hi Nick, going to the Hamfest in Richmond?

I destroyed Union Station in DC trying to get my Acela out one time on MSTS.

BTW, went to Balt recently on Amtrak and they hit 110mph between DC and Balt.

No, I'm not a HAM...yet. I think I might get into the hobby, I don't know. Right now milair and RR's have me occupied :)

I've had some pretty good wrecks before on MSTS. It makes a big mess when you hit another train. lol

most of the time I do like Gomez does on the Adams Family and just let the train go downhill really fast and see what happens!

I have Microsoft Train Simulator and used to spend many hours operating it.
Seems not that I'm retired I have no time to play anymore.
I liked to get an engine and a long string of freight cars and get the damn thing going as fast as it would go "down a hill" and stear it off on a dead end spur and watch all the cars go flying everywhere.
Used to know all the keyboard commands by heart for most of the engines.
Think I'll install it on my new laptop and start enjoying it again.
I had some add-on's too, just don't remember which ones right now.
Thanks all for getting me interested again.
I listed to many of the rail frequencies on my BC780xlt and have active train tracks in my back yard... within stone throw distance here in Stafford, CT
Also enjoy wathing the train shows on RFDTV.

Hi..I started out with MSTS but then switched to Trainz as you can run more than one train at a time. Had eight running at one time doing different things and going on different routes going different speeds. http://www.auran.com/TRS2006/index.php I started with UTC and then bought Trainz 2004 and then upgraded to Trainz 2006. I think it is more like the real thing than MSTS but then life would be boring if everyone liked the same thing. Try it you will like it. Cheers...Keithmj

I enjoy working in the yard building a train. I find it takes a lot of concentration to get the right cars in the correct line up. I very rarely just run a train. My grandson enjoys driving as fast as he can until it wrecks.
