Many HAMs monitor the traditional calling frequencies of various bands, and most ham travel with at least a 2m radio if not a 2m/70cm radio or a full blown mobile HF station. Also tune into the local VHF/UHF repeaters for some activity.

Here's a list with some more information of gentleman's agreement usage of frequencies
Band Plan

I've been keeping an ear out on 146.52 from my QTH this weekend and called CQ a few times in hopes of raising a few holiday travellers.

I find that very few folks monitor .520 simplex any more. I travel a lot and have an easily recognizable ham radio setup that spans all of HF on through to UHF. It is hard to miss my truck LOL.

With all of that, I can only think of 1 or 2 highway QSOs in the last 10 years.

What I have had great success with was whatever state I am in and their 80 or 40 meter frequency. Like here in Wyoming, we use 3.9235 as a statewide chat frequency. It is non dependent on repeaters and it has great coverage.

Just a thought,

WM

I have found that 146.520 has a few folks on it but your best bet is to get a mobile unit. You can use it in the house as well with a power supply that put out the needed amps. Mobiles have more output power, HT's are normally 5 watts max. With you being in Wyoming, a mobile is a must.
