Hello All:

I recently bought a TRX-2 for my car. Programmed it with the EZ Scan software. I am not having much luck with the CT Land Mobile Radio Network (CLMRN) P-25, Phase II trunked system. I have all of the sites downloaded and the specific talk groups that I want to hear, but minimal activity. I am near several towers, so I am not sure what I am missing. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Mike

Best of luck as well. I purchased the TRX-2 several months ago fully aware of the simulcast distortion issues, but did not realize how severe they were. Although I was tempted a few times to return it during the 30 day return period, I decided not too--- on the digital systems that the radio is "friendly" with, the digital decoding is amazing--- the best I have heard from any radio.

Aside from the Uniden SDS series, you might take a look at the Blue Tail Technologies P25RX-II. No simulcast issues with that device. Not a "typical" scanner, but have used it several times in the car having programmed it via computer at home and is well worth a look-see.

Last I knew the Blue Tail "scanners" were out of stock. I sighed up for the email alerts for when the come back in, but never heard back.

There is a page where you can sign up and get a discount if you pre-pay:

Not sure what the current status of that product is--- I am very happy with the one that I purchased several months ago. It arrived within a week of my pre-paid order. You might also inquire on the BTT forum here on Radio Reference.

Thanks. I am actually ok with it. The trunked system wasn't a priority for me anyway. Plus, I need the remote head mount for my car so it worked out.

I also wanted the remote head option. I can't exactly put my finger on it; this is the first Whistler that I've actually owned. But the TRX-2 has a certain "charm" about it. Aside from the removable head, it was the feel, the form factor, and the absolute clarity and "presence" of sound that comes out of that top mounted speaker. And as I previously stated, it has the best decoding of digital audio that I have heard from any receiver I have ever used. I love my SDS radios but the TRX seems to have much better AGC control over digital networks, which is somewhat of a shortcoming in the SDS series.

There are some "devious" ways to possibly get around the simulcast issue that may or may not work for you on the TRX. A friend decided that he could still glean information by using the old trick of programming in all the input frequencies of the trunked system he wanted to monitor. Units near him that were accessing the trunked system would often come through loud and clear on the input channels. Certainly not a solution, but a way to pick up tidbits of info not otherwise accessible. All the usual YMMV, IMHO and other disclaimers thrown in for good measure.

Hello all. First time poster here long time scanner enthusiast!

@MedicMike153 , I have been using a TRX-1 for the past 3 years and love it. One of the biggest issues with these scanners is definitely simulcast distortion. I live in the New Hartford area and have had great luck with reception of CSP in my area. One of the biggest things you can do to try to increase reception is change your antenna. I have been using a Remtronix 842b and have had great all round results, especially this time of the year where leaves have blocked some of the reception to my location. Try a shorter antenna and mess around with your squelch if distortion in your area is severe. Sometimes I can see that there is a simulcast transmission, but the radio will not play the transmission due to distortion or overload. The squelch on the TRX 1 and 2 can also affect digital reception. Another quick change you can make is by changing the threshold settings in the menu ,within the radio or ezscan, for that particular channel you are trying to receive. Hope this helps a bit. Always nice to see another Whistler user out there!
