Hello all,
I'm Trying to Clone Uniden BCD996P2, getting error message after pressing the "scan" buttons on Slave and Master unit... ive tried both "orders" of pushing "scan"... ive checked the cable connections... It's a brand new USB "DB9 to Mini" cable... So after pushing "Scan" buttons the Master unit first says "CONNECTING" then 10-15 seconds it reads ERROR and locks up. The Slave unit is "waiting for data" and never changes... I suppose it could be a bad cable... i only have one at this point... Any tips would be appreciated....

Cloning modern scanners your just asking for trouble more often then not honestly.
996P2 and what other scanner are you working with? If your using a radio shack/whistler or any of the zip code scanners it is entirely different programming and would fail 100%.

May also be a programming issue, post your programming here. Cloning scanners directly is not a good idea especially newer Unidens, last ones that had an option of cloning in the radios were way back when with the 996T/396T.

Copy programming: Just install freescan and upload the programming to that and then connect and send the info(download) over to the other scanner is the way to do it.

Is this the process you are following to clone a 996p2 to another 996p2?

From:Easier to Read BCD996P2/XT Digital Scanner Manual

Cloning to clone (copy) data from one (same) scanner to another, use one of the included data cables to connect the two scanners. Plug the DB9 end into the rear port of one scanner and the other end into the front port of the other scanner. Then set up both scanners:
For each scanner, press MENU. Scroll to 'Wired Clone' and press E/●.
Scroll to 'Wired Clone' and press E/●.
Scroll to 'Slave' and press E/● for the destination scanner.
At 'Select Comm Port' scroll to the port the Slave scanner is using.
Scroll to 'Master' and press E/● for the source scanner.
At 'Select Comm Port' scroll to the port the Master scanner is using.
Press Scan/Srch on the Slave scanner then on the Master scanner. The master scanner checks to make sure the slave is properly connected and ready to receive, then begins the data transfer. When the transfer is finished, both scanners display a 'Complete' message. Reboot the slave scanner to load the new settings. Note: All settings and data saved on the Slave scanner will be erased.

To clone one BCD996P2 to another, you need to use the rear DB9 connectors with a null modem cable and gender changers. From Paul the former uniden rep: You can clone using the rear DB9 and null modem/gender changer cable(s).

What is the "slave" scanner. Another 996P2?
Yes sorry...i thought it was implied that the two scanners were both identical 996P2's... Ive had nothing but success with ALL my RS, GRE, Whistler radios that have clone functions... for decades... not this time...

OK this is something... Im not familiar with these terms null modem/gender changer... I just bought a cheap basic DB9 to Mini USB.. There's a video on YT of cloning using the same cable and cloning the same 996P2 radios successfully... Any articles or detailed info would be great. I will research in the interim... Grateful for your advice... Thank you

OK i learned the diff of straight AT DB9 cables vs Null-modem... makes sense... now what about the gender changers... is that another way of "adapter" from Male to Female?... Both scanners have a Male connectors on back... Would a double Fem DB9 (null-modem) cable work? Thanks again

Gender changers are available both as a double male and double female, depending upon what you need. A null modem cable with female DB9 connectors on both ends would work for cloning 2 BCD996P2 scanners. You cannot clone a BCD996P2 to a BCD325P2 since the BCD325P2 lacks a serial connector. I have successfully cloned BC796D to BC796D, BCD996T to BCD996T, BCD396T to BCD396T, BCD996XT to BCD996XT, and BCD396XT to BCD396XT. The GRE PSR-500/600, the Radio Shack PRO-106/197/651/652, and the Whistler WS1040/1065 are all essentially the same scanner and use the same programming software. Any of those models can be cloned from one to another. You will not be able to clone different types of scanners.

Thanks to everyone... sorry for the hassle... Your expertise is valuable, concise, and appreciated. I could avoid a ton of hassle if i had any Microsoft devices...Grass is greener etc. etc. ... there's upside and downside's to owning all Apple

Let me make one correction. It would not be possible to do a wired clone from a BCD996P2 to a BCD325P2 since they are different models.

Does anyone know if it is possible doing a wired clone using 2 BCD325P2 scanners without a computer? The instructions in the owner's manual do not make any sense.

Cloning

Allows you to clone (copy) data from one (same) scanner to a PC. You must first connect the scanner to the PC using the USB cable. Plug the smaller end of each of the included connection cables into the Remote jack on the side of each scanner. Then connect the other end of the cables together using the null modem adapter.

Then set up both scanners:

For each scanner, press Menu. Scroll to ‘Wired Clone’ and press E/yes. Scroll to ‘Wired Clone’ and press E/yes. Scroll to ‘Slave’ and press E/yes for the destination scanner. Scroll to ‘Master’ and press E/yes for the source scanner. Press Scan/Srch on the Slave scanner then on the Master scanner. The master scanner checks to make sure the slave is properly connected and ready to receive, then begins the data transfer. -- When the transfer is finished, both scanners display a ‘Complete’ message. Reboot the slave scanner to load the new settings. Note: All settings and data saved on the Slave scanner will be erased
