Just to keep this from getting too diverted... I think he specifically said "TSA", not "all airports are going encrypted".

LOL.. Love this every time...

Here in INDY....
TSA actual TSA is P25, and in the clear. They have encryption modules, but only use them rarely.
TSA contracted folks is analog and mixture of in the clear and Voice Inversion.

Is playing "I've Got A Secret" part of the radio shop tech orientation, or is it just a disease that people who go into radio service tend to have?

You are not the first or last radio shop employee that I've heard give the "I know stuff that I can't tell you" spiel.

From the ones I've seen here, it's a definitely a little from column A and a little from column B.

You'll almost hear nothing that great on most airport TSA stuff anyways.

If you want to hear bag checks of secondary screening - eh. TSM needed at Charlie 4.....

The managers and checkpoint supervisors mostly carry the Moto P25 gear and the rest of the TSO's have the little ICOM style point A to B radios. TSA learned very quickly that the gate checkers don't need $4,000 P25 radios - and they get expensive really quick. This is why they went with the cheap ones for the rank and file. The Relm ones work out to about 1100 each if my head math is correct.

Most "Critical" TSA ops are by phone/cell phone back to the coordination center. I had a TSM that we would see walk around with two cellphones attached to her head when we have issues. It was always good for a laugh.

Most coordination centers I have seen was a TSO sitting at a control stations and a laptop/desktop and that's about it (and a few years ago). TSA never had their stuff "wired" well and most had a basement/stuff TSA in a corner of the airport/location.

The TSA at Newark Liberty International Airport here in NJ utilizes the NY&NJ Port Authorities EDACS system in a analog mode. I'm sure other airports utilize different radios, etc etc. Bottom line their is no standard with the TSA for radio systems per se.

7424, which of the following talkgroups are you hearing the US Transportation Security Administration using on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's EDACS:

00-080 Link to the Central Police Desk
00-081 Primary (for EWR/Port Newark/Teterboro Airport)
00-082 ARFF
00-083 Tac 1
00-084 Tac 2
00-085 Tac 3 (VIP)
00-086 Tac 4
00-087 Areawide

Or on another one?

(I suspect that EWR's TSOs may have access to the PANYNJ system, to communicate with the Port Authority Police Department when needed, but don't use it for their own internal operations.)

7424, what talkgroup is the US Transportation Security Administration using on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's EDACS? 00-081?

Even though it says Newark ( for a talkgroup ID) I have heard very recently the TSA doing daily operations on that talkgroup. The whole talkgroup needs to be updated. The ID's are still valid, but the descriptions need updating.

Thank you. I'm curious now to see is this is a one off thing at the PANYNJ airports or if any of the other three (JFK, LGA, and SWF) have something similar going on.

TSA uses their own system for day to day operations. If given access to airport radios, that is up to the airport management.

We gave them two of our radios, but it was never used. They would call us via phone is they needed anything.

You have to remember prior to 9/11 that 99% of all airport security screenings where private contractors who utilitized whatever the company had in place, which was usually nothing to very little.

TSA came in doing their own thing, using the high portion of the VHF federal allocation. That is/was the standard.

A lot of people have maturity issues and like to feel important. Petty childish in my humble opinion. If it were truly a secret, he never would have spoken up.

Whatever. I just live and let live. :)

And a little history for the newer folks, the TSA Common Pairs actually came from the FAA

Just my two cents, keep in mind it is not uncommon that another agency is using the TSA repeater from time to time . Customs and the FBI here in Raleigh have been on the local TSA machine here running encryption. How would I know you ask? Well, the radio ID's are not encrypted so makes it pretty easy to figure out which agency it is.

Customs I could definitely see...FBI not so much unless they're using loaner radios.
