Philly has good video feed on their ABC Chopper 6 (A7DE3C) N606HD. If chopper is up they are feeding unedited
constant video.. Intersting when Eye Cam rested facing rear of chopper and you could see the two Yagi GPS rotatable beam antennas
in a clear Lexan type box for actual video feed.

Who would guess 34 news helicopters across the country up and active on a Sunday night.
Chopper pilots around the Country getting some OT in for sure..
Wonder how that works with contractors news choppers.. Hourly rates will be expensive :)
Easy to see how things are in Philly.. Cops busy with downtown so looters head for outer sections.

Two things that help keep the cost down. First off, many of the contracted news choppers are the much cheaper Robison R-44 choppers. They're less expensive and are cheaper to fly and maintain. Secondly, many of the contracts are not exclusive so a single chopper will provide video to multiple stations. Even on an "exclusive" license, there is often terms that allow the chopper company to provide access to the video or even the live video feed to other stations on a secondary basis (often on a delayed basis, but sometimes live).

The up side to contracting for chopper services are cost savings (you don't pay for a chopper to sit around waiting for a story, but only pay for use during that story), and the ability to have a chopper available when the station wouldn't typically be able to (due to being a smaller sized market or the station being part of a large conglomerate that won't allow a station to have their own chopper). Often that company may have multiple choppers available and can cover multiple areas at once.

The down sides are that you don't have control over the chopper. You may want it to cover a large fire in one area, but the other station wants coverage of flooding in another area of town. There may be limits placed on where the company will send one of their choppers. If your story is beyond those limits you'll get no air coverage of your desired story. The chopper will not have your station's markings on it so it can't be used for marketing. You may call it "News Chopper 4", but your competition may call it "Chopper 5" but it's the same bird and same video from the white chopper that just has the tail number and "TV" painted on it.

Here in San Diego, the chopper is first for traffic, then Ch 8 (CBS) is primary TV, and gets audio from it, other stations get the video but no commentary, they have to do their own voiceovers.

Will the web links listed above about news helicopters also show medical helicopters in the air? I have a good bit of medical copter activity in my area and would be interested in viewing them on the map. Thanks
