• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

New to radio world as far as transceivers go. I'm a captain for a local fire department and I've recently added a mobile radio to my vehicle. The tyt-th9800 I know it's a Chinese cheapo but it had the dual band capabilities i needed at a good price since my county uses VHF and uhf for public safety. I have a mag mount pretuned nmo stubby on the trunk. Now my issue I have programmed the radio with what I thought was correct settings I can hear all the right radio traffic on all channels I programmed but when it comes to transmitting to central dispatch they can't hear me but anyone of my guys on the department can hear me fine on there portables. I'm not sure if I've missed a setting or what. Thanks for any help

You probably have the correct RX freq, but not the correct TX freq and tone, and are not activating the repeater.

The following video might be helpful. He discusses setting the encode (transmit) CTCSS tone around 12:30 into the video. From the information you have this would be set to 127.3. Shortly after that he shows how to set the decode (receive) tone. This would be set to 186.2 in your case. Note that the decode tone is optional. You could set it to none (off) and you would simply hear all transmissions on the receive frequency regardless of what tone is being used. This is also the correct setting if the repeater is not sending a tone when transmitting.

Since you are on a public safety system, remember to set your radio to narrow band deviation on the public safety channels.

You didn't mention which software application you use to program the radio. I've found for my 9800 the RT Systems software is easier to use than CHIRP and far, far, better than the TYT software.

You may also want to experiment with the "emphasis" setting on each channel. I've found (for the systems I use) that checking that box gives clearer, stronger received audio. Your mileage will vary.
