To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Tytera TYT UV MD380 Not unmuting on Weather Channels

As described in the title, I have 2 UV MD380's (one for my son, and one for me), but neither will unmute for NWS channels. We have checked the programming, and all seems right - 25 kHz signal width, no PL tones, just straight weather channels.

It receives other audio just fine, and shows a bit of signal in the upper left corner, but no audio, even with the squelch at zero or any other number. Even with the monitor function on, it's still not giving any audio.

Several other weather radios - from my G5, to the lowly Baofeng all can receive at least one weather station well - so we can rule out the weather station being out of service.

Any suggestion on what I might be missing?

Thanks,

Program the monitor button so that you also can open the squelch when the button are held in, you will hear noise without any antenna connected. Then listen to the NWS channel and open the squelch. It might be a too weak signal to break squelch or you will at least hear whats happening on the frequency and will be able to find out if it's a programming error or a RF receive problem. I think the UV models are dual band with a receiver type that are compromised very easily and not as good as the single band MD380.

Thanks for the reminder. Checked with monitor button held down, and squelch open (level zero), and still not any real change.

All the other radios pick up the at least one weather channel with quite good , but not perfect quality. This might be part of a lot with a compromised receiver, will contact the vendor next week. Any chance it would be a firmware fix?

I know it receives well, because it's picked up fire paging and amateur traffic in the area.

Check in General Settings that you have the Monitor Type set to Open Squelch and one of the side buttons set to Monitor, preferable after a long press. Then check that the channel are programmed to None for the CTCSS/DCS Dec.

You should get a noise in the speaker when that side button are held in or something are very wrong with those two radios. Do they use the standard firmware that came with the radio or any of the modified ones that allows promiscous mode and other extras? Then it needs to be the exact firmware for that type of model and also if the radio are of the old or new hardware and with or without GPS, or it stops working properly.

All settings are correct, and as noted. Firmware is as it came from the factory, no modifications.

Opened a support ticket with the vendor, so maybe they can swap them out for new radios.

I forgot to post a follow up on this matter. We did get the radios to receive weather channels. We had to unlock the radios with a combination of button presses on power up.

That did solve the problem, and it seems to have an okay receiver.

I'm sort of having the same issue, I just hear static on weather frequencies. I am curious as to how you unlocked the radios?
