Hi all,
Thanks for your time. A mate of mine has an issue with his scanner. Its the handheld version UBCD436-PT (Australian Version). He is using a Windows 11 x64 computer.

The problem is that the computer will not recognize his scanner when he plugs it in. He is using the original Uniden supplied cable. It does get seen in programming mode though but what he is trying to do is use Proscan to control the scanner. This can only be done when a virtual com port gets created which would enable the virtual display (To my knowledge).

On the Proscan website the scanner is listed as compatible. I personally own the 536 desktop variant which doesnt use USB but a LPT (com port cable) which I just convert to USB using a store bought converter. He just plugs the USB cables in, turns on the scanner and opens Proscan.

However, when he sets it up in Proscan, nothing shows up in the com port menu. He selected the correct scanner in the menu. I confirmed that.

I tried sifting through the manual to help him out but obviously I am missing something major. Is it not compatible with the virtual display? Are critical drivers missing?

I havent held this scanner in my hand personally and I can only help remotely.

If anyone could give me some information on what I am doing wrong or if what he is trying to do with Proscan just not possible?

Thanks for reading and if you have any questions I`ll make sure to get an answer quickly.

So the new issue is that even though the scanner is plugged in it is not generating a virtual com port. I had him:
Restart
Restart the scanner
Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager
Use a different USB port

Nothing is working for him. So basically the system isnt requesting a driver at all because the scanner is not recognised.

Has anyone come across this before? Any other ideas?

Thanks everyone.

Which button is he pressing on the scanner after it powers up? That is, with the USB cable connected, the scanner should ask you what mode you want, and I think I have to press the “.” for serial mode.

For programming the scanners SD card are used as a standard external USB memory but for control it uses a serial connections that must use a specific Windows driver, in this case uniden_usbser. https://info.uniden.com/twiki/bin/view/Unidenman4/BCD436HP

The 436 and 536 uses the same mini USB port and interface chip in the scanner for USB control.
