Good afternoon everyone. I am in Ballarat in Central Victoria . I hope this is in the correct forum .
I got a brand new UBCD436PT after using a UBCD396XT for 13 years and can`t get it to do what it is meant to do.
I am a not a technically minded radio person but have had the UBCD396XT scanning CFA victoria and previously the police frequencies when they were not encrypted with success but it was a learning curve for about 2 years while i learned to program it.
The new UBCD436PT is a whole new concept to me.No scan or hold button and the way they work has thrown me for a start . It has the Micro SD card to scan the CFA and other services and the supplier has stated that to access the region i want that all i need to do is type in the number and Enter. That is not working. They didn`t give me much direction on what might be wrong ,so i have come here for help . I mainly use region 15 to access the CFA, DELWP, SES etc and their supplimentary instructions state to press 15 and ENTER and it will scan all those services. NO GO . All it does is say quick keys on or off each time i do it and it won`t scan unless i go back to the menu button .It never worked from the time i got the scanner . The full database is turned on with no AVOIDS , ALL lists is ON ,the system Quick keys says no Quick keys assigned , but the SET quick key status for each service is switched ON and the services i want are set in the favourites list and all other services like METRO are turned off . Yet all i get is the scanner stuck on either DELWP for a couple of minutes or Victorian SMR MPT or it goes to custom scan and nothing happens. I have not been able to listen to anything ,but my old scanner is purring away hitting on everything. What have i done wrong ? What do i need to press on or off to get it all to work ? I just want to simply scan my region`s services and those close by . Thankyou for any help. FOZ

When you have a star on the display instead of a digit it means that you have something being taken out of scan.

Push the 0 button and the scanner will show what favorite lists you have programmed between quick key 0-9 and will either be a star or a digit.
If you instead push 1 you will see the favorite lists between 10-19
Use the selector to move the cursor back over the digit and enter a new one. Continue with 2-9 to see all favorite lists in the scanner that has a quick key programmed to it. Write down that information or take a picture of it.

Go to menu and Set Scan Selection and then Select List to Monitor.
There you have all your favorites that you can switch on or off.
Do not select the first one Search with Scan or Quick Save Favorites to be On.
You can write down the lists you have or take a picture of it and compare to the quick key result, they should be the same if all favorites have a quick key assign to them.

When scanning push the 0 button and you will see that you have favorite lists 1-2-3-6-7 to choose from. If the 2 are replaced by a star you then push 2 and E to switch it from being disabled to enabled.
Continue from the scan mode to push 1 and you'll see favorite lists 10-19 and if any has a star you push its number key to toggle from disable to enable. To check without changing anything by the E key you just scroll back with the selector and change the digit to another one. Continue to go thru all keys 0-9.

To check if your systems are enabled, there can be up to 99 of them with assigned quick keys for each favorite list, then from scan mode push a digit for a favorite list, 0-99, and then the dot/No button and then 0 to see systems with quick key 0-9 assigned to them. You can do the same thing here by toggle between a system being scanned or not, a digit or a star, by enter the number for that system and then E. Or just check by going back with the selector and change the system number between 0-99.

Departments works in the same way, push 1.1. to check what departments are assigned to favorite list 1 and system 1.

Pushing 0 goes straight through to Quick key navigation and not the favourites list. It comes up with F0-1-3-67-- and i can`t add or delete a number . If I type in my region which is 15 , it turns the quick key off. I can`t get to the favourites list this way . I don`t even get the option of stars now. All blank numbers are just written as a dash and not a star which would mean nothing is there.

The 13 services I have selected are all on the same number under the system quick keys status, my favourites quick key status and lists to monitor. So CFA region 15 reads as being on number 15 for each one of the above .

I toggle through the various departments after pressing SYSTEM and DEPT SITE but most are not there on the screen. I cannot even see the CFA dispatch or the CFA frequencies I have programmed in on the micro SD card. This Card was professionally done and came with the scanner and the frequencies are there but it just will not scan them .

Pushing 1.1 for a DEPT and favourites list won`t work either.

Maybe the Australian version is set up different to other versions of this scanner around the world and that is why the buttons don`t work in the same way.

Thankyou for all of your advice thus far. I have followed your instructions to a T and this scanner is not playing ball . It is not doing what you say it should do . Something is amiss. I shall make some calls during the week to see if anyone can have a look at it for me. It is frustrating paying all this money for such a good unit and not being able to use it.
Thanks again UBBE.

Yes, you can only control quick keys in this way so needs everything to have quick keys assigned them, and that should have been done to your SD card if you paid for it to be programmed.

It comes up with F0-1-3-67-- and i can`t add or delete a number.
As long as it isn't a star then it is included in scan. A dash means that no quick key are using that number. A digit means that it is enabled. This line shows your favorite list 00-09 and you have 01-03-06 and 07 assigned and enabled with quick keys.
If I type in my region which is 15 , it turns the quick key off.
When you use the selector knob to make the cursor stand over the 0 you enter a 1 so it says F1. Then it will display favorite 10-19. In that line it will be a 5 or star and if it is a star it then indicates you have 15 disabled.

So you will have to regard the x in Fx and Sx and Dx as the first digit in a dubbel digit number and the following digits on the line are then the second digit, and if it has been replaced by a star it is disabled. If it says F1----*---- it means that 15 are disabled and you then enter 5 after the 1 and then E without scrolling back with the scroll knob to enable it.

Good morning , Ubbe. Thankyou for that. I have been playing around with the settings to work it out and tried pressing the 1 to change it to F1 ,which it does do but when i press enter it still changes to either quick keys off or on. I have managed to get to and activate region 15 by going to the review / edit system ang getting into the CFA district 15 dispatch and it is now scanning properly ,but today is not a hot day here ,so no fires around to monitor. One frustration is it scans and then goes to CUSTOM and won`t go past there ,so i have put the district 15 on hold to stop that. Thanks for all your help. It is much appreciated. And if this thread has helped an else, the world is a better place thanks to Ubbe.

That are how you do it when you do not have any quick keys assigned, or if you turn everything off from scan and get a "Nothing to scan" message.
One frustration is it scans and then goes to CUSTOM and won`t go past there ,so i have put the district 15 on hold to stop that.
Custom are probably a search range. You can turn search ranges named Custom1-2-3 to On or Off by Function and then the 1,2 or 3 keypad button when you have stopped the scan by a Hold. It will then not scan anything but instead do frequency range searches, if you have something programmed to those ranges.

You can edit those search keys in Sentinels Profile or in the scanners menu in Search for.../Set Search Key
I recommend to set those 3 keys to None. Also in that Search for... menu you can go to Search with Scan and set that to Permanent Avoid so it wont interfere with your scanning.

To switch from search to scan mode you do Function+System.

The Custom text can also be a Service Type. Go into the scanners menu and to Select Service Types and turn the selector knob anti clockwise to get to Customs and if any of them are not a dash but instead set to On or Off it means that you have some TG's programmed that use Custom service types. Usually it is when you (unintentionally) have saved an unknown TG you have found in ID Search to memory that it automatically gets assigned to service type Custom 1.
