So on my way to Uwarrie for my annual trip and did a search and find nothing for this area in the forums. I swore when i went last year I found some stuff. Anyone know if anything changed down there ? Any new GMRS sites ? I had a ham repeater in my mobile but never got good coverage. Lastly I had logged NPS on 172.225 on analog but never heard boo on the channel including times I saw a ranger talking on his mobile. Are they on Viper now ?

As far as amateur radio goes and depending on exactly where you are going, I would try the 443.525 +5, 77.0/77.0 machine which is Albermarle/ Morrow Mtn. Others to give a shot are 147.090 +.600 100/100 and 442.200 +5 100/100 which are both KI4DH machines in the 'Mount Gilead, Uwharrie National Forest' area. I very rarely hear anyone on any of those but I have heard the Albermarle one more than the others.

If you're wheeling try CB channel 4. There's also usually a mixture of people on murs, frs, and gmrs. I'm not aware of any gmrs repeaters.

As far as rangers and such go, I have never heard any of the USFS guys on the radio at all. Which isn't surprising because it's incredibly rare that I've ever even seen them. I would assume they are on 172.225 or viper. I have however seen and heard NC wildlife officers on the water and in the area. They definitely use viper but they aren't super chatty. Bow season did recently open for deer so you may see them out and about a bit more. On that same note, if you're hiking play it safe and wear some orange.

If you're camping, Deep water trail that's way down near the end of FR 576 is a great spot if you're trying to be on the water but it's been super busy lately. I usually hit Joe Moffit or Hannah's Creek myself since they are a bit less used and I enjoy the hike.

The weather today and tomorrow is going to be wet but this weekend looks great. Have fun!

Thanks. I have 147.090 in my rig already from last year. I'll be down for a Jeep event and know we will be on GMRS this year as JJUSA has switched from CB. I talked to a ranger last year that was checking registrations and he had an APX portable but didn't ask him about it. He was on his mobile running a plate when I walked up so know he was on a VHF (VHF 1/4 wave on roof). Guess I'll see what I find this weekend. We are camping at Holly Bluff up on RT 49...Wasn't sure how the fields would be this year for a 40' MH...

I agree with cmcjonesinc comments, tho i have heard traffic on 172.225. like twice. and usually the office saying goodnight to a ranger. so who knows. theres like 3 of em total i think.

cb is where i hear most traffic. well the ground based traffic. the airborne stuff is more interesting and frequent.

I just wonder if Uwharrie rangers could be on UASI.
There is a UASI tower near Albemarle/Morrow Mountain.

I think its simply a manpower issue

by reading between the lines, it seems to me that if one is on duty, one is at home asleep, and the other one is at home getting ready to start his shift, the reason to carry around a radio is more for "help i've fallen and i can't get up" than for "hey Billy, found another still down on Dutch John creek. Call the revernooers, wesa gonna get 'em this time!"

for more than one to be on duty at the same time it has to be something realll important.

like 4th of july.

or Sasquatch ate another camper.
