• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

As many of you know I and a few others are Pre Beta testing firmware with a couple scanner features for the G series pager.

I am strongly suggesting to Unication to consider developing a new Scanner model.
Please give them any support for them to make a scanner and also give any suggestions for a scanner model.
I need everyones help to make this happen.

Lets show Unication we all want another scanner.

Thanks
Any chance this be a sticky so be easy for Unication to follow?

This is a fantastic idea. Undoubtedly, for those of us in non "E" land these units would be a hit and sell out right away. Thanks, Jeff.

I like scanning. I use my G5 as both a pager for the fire service and as a scanner (and I am looking forward to the upcoming enhancements). I'll certainly take a look at whatever products they develop. I would continue to be interested in radios that can be used as both.

Wow - this is fantastic!

This is the right time and opportunity for Unication to bring a scanner to the market. I love my G4 because of the commercial look and feel, the stellar audio, and the perfect P25 performance. I've learned to work around the shortcomings with programming tricks, but it doesn't bother me - the unit is that good. Having a full featured scanner that performs the same way would introduce serious competition. For those who took a chance to buy a Unication pager - we already know how good they are. A scanner would open up that market to everyone else.

For Unication:

The Uniden x36 series was their first serious attempt at quality P25, but they were hit and miss. The SDS series seems to have solved the P25 problem, but that win has been (and still continues to be) marked by many quality, manufacturing, and recall/repair issues. The x36 series had similar quality problems. Whistler has not yet solved consistently good P25 decode, but their DMR and NXDN is successful. These are the current opportunities.

When I turn on my G4, I know that it will work, be tough, and provide perfect receive. That's what people want.

I don't know what is planned for a Unication scanner, but don't make it try to do everything. For example, I like to listen to military air on 225-400 MHz. I already have 3 great radios for that (Icom R6, Uniden 396XT & BC780XLT). I don't need and wouldn't expect Unication to deliver that.

I'm looking forward to whatever comes next!

Handheld/portable: Things I would like to see/know about. Hopefully it’s built from the current platform and offers some of the pagers quality features.
1. Price ?
2. durable/rugged ✅
3. Battery life ✅
4. Drop in charger option ✅
5. Simulcast reception ✅
6. Dmr/Nxdn (trunking) upgradable? Obviously will need to do p25 phase 1/2.
7. Remote head feature/remote programming from a smart phone via app ?
8. Upgraded Bluetooth?
9. Apple CarPlay would be neat. (Maybe?)
10. Frequency range. Not sure it needs a full spectrum of the traditional scanner? I think most of us do not spend big $ to listen to 25mhz etc? I could be wrong and it may not be a cost factor anyway.
11. Base scanner in the future?
12. How will it be programmed? Will it use current PPS or something similar/better. Or easier for the not so knowledgeable or maybe a preprogrammed option.
13.Warranty
14. Gps option (does it really need it?)

I’m trying to think of useful things that won’t drive up the cost. I’m sure there is a lot more things to add. This was just a quick list.

The only reason I can not use a G5 is we are currently 800 Analog Trunking and Simulcast on VHF on dispatch meaning we have to be paged VHF and communicate 800 Trunking and the G5 G4 does not do Analog 800.

My newbie post still have to get approval so they are delayed but in my post in quarantine I mirrored most of what you have said. I like my uniden products(over 30yrs) but I have experienced some of the quality issues on newest model and that concerns me. I think I can live without a lot of the “bells and whistles” of a Unication scanner especially if it saves on product cost but delivers on performance.

This is a fantastic idea. First off, it would have to be a TRI-Band VHF, UHF, and 700-800mhz. Replace the channel knob with a rotary knob that offers more functionality. DMR would be included so no issues with sending the unit back for an upgrade. A TRI-Band antenna would be nice. Update Bluetooth to be more compatible with the latest technology.

I would hope Unication could achieve this by using the existing G3/4/5 series. This would help keep the cost within our reach, and hopefully see something by the end of the year.

Forgot in my post today to mention I also told Unication we like to see a base/mobile version.
Most all agree?

My suggestions:
1. The ability to scan VHF/UHF/700/800.
2. The ability to scan multiple systems at once.
3. Scan delay.
4. Talkgroup hold.
5. Replace channel knob with rotary control for scrolling through talkgroups or use up and down arrows or the navigation key.
6. If keeping the channel knob, increase it from 8 to 16 positions.
Thank you for your consideration!

The ability to scan multiple sites and systems even in monitor mode to search for new TGs while scanning, similar to a scanner set to ID search. Make it so VHF and UHF are off of the external antenna and not the internal one same as 700/800. Bump up the number of talkgroups from 64. On larger systems 64 talkgroups goes by pretty fast. That makes you cherry pick the TGs you really want to hear. The T/XT and P2 Uniden scanners can support 500 talkgroups with their internal memory and the HP radios support an unlimited amount.

If Unication did this I'd buy one.

THIS X 1000!!!! I would absolutely LOVE a base/mobile version of the G4 series. I use my G5 for fire service and also monitoring other depts/agencies. I love the fact that I can carry my G5 around with me, but it would be even better if I could have a mobile version actually mounted in the truck with a slightly louder speaker. I wouldn't mind if it even used the same screen as the pager. This would be a hit with scanner enthusiasts as well, as some just want a base at home to monitor with. I have already helped many people in my area decide to get a Unication G4. They work!

I am definitely interested in a Unication scanner! That includes base and/or handheld models! Having the ability to monitor more than one system at a time would be huge!

As Steve would say "There IS one more thing"
Input for wanting and features for a SmartPhone App.

Maybe just to program a scanner via BT.
