any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated!
I just got the apple mac mini silicon m1, installed the "Parallels 17" to run WINDOWS11. all my devices ( printer, anytone 878) work great
However, when I plug in my uniden 996p2 via the usb port from uniden front panel to the mac mini m1 I do get a popup asking if I allow Parallels to access the 996p2? so I allow but then when I open FreeSCAN to program my uniden, say freescan does not see the uniden 996p2? when I go to device manager I see the device serial port show up in two areas when I plug in the scanner and disappear when I unplug it? I don't get it I have spent countless hours trying to figure this out
I am willing to make a video of this issue and post it on youtube for anyone that want to see what my issue is and maybe can tell me why freescan does not see my scanner. I do know free scan is only compatible up to windows 10 and I am running windows 11 but was told by I cant remember it should work on 11, please help

Does Sentinel work?
Is there a way to set what windows port freescan is to use?

Sentinel cannot be used on that scanner.

Yes you can set the port in Freescan.

Sometimes it takes a few tries to get it to see the scanner.

Try powering the scanner off and on a few times and connecting/reconnecting the cable.

In FreeSCAN, click on the drop-down Scanner menu & select Control Control.

That brings up the Virtual Control menu.
Select Com Port Setup on that menu.

That gets you to the next menu.

There, you have the option to have FreeSCAN find whichever port the scanner is on.

Have you installed the Serial Port driver?
You can find a link to it on the 996P2's Wiki page.

You can also use this link, which takes you to ScannerMaster's website with more instructions.

Since you are using Windows via Parallels, I suspect that you would need to do the driver setup in Windows 11.

This sounds like the Parallels comm. port problem . Here's a couple of links that should help fix the problem. If these don't help then google "radioreference Parallels" or "radioreference Parallels comm. port"

I don't use ProScan so have no idea at how hard it drives the serial port when running natively under Windows.

However as the author of Scan125/Scan75 I can confirm that getting my programs to run cleanly on the USB/COMS side of things is a real pain and I had to do all sorts of COM software retries.

The root cause of these issues I think centres around the following points.
  • Windows likes to be in absolute control of the USB/COM ports
  • This becomes even more important at high data speeds
  • Virtual machines, emulators, etc. sit between your USB device and Windows ( OS <--> VM/emulator/parallels/wine/etc <--> Windows <--> Proscan)
  • Fast bi-directional COMs (unlike driving a USB printer) have the most issues
I don't have many MAC users. Those that have had similar problems drop back to using BOOTCAMP and run Windows natively on their hardware.

What I was trying to say is that not all Windows software, especially software that drives hardware / USB runs smoothly on VM's / Emulators.

You have not said that you have tried to boot Windows natively with Bootcamp and confirmed that when you do this you have no issues. That would be the sensible starting point.

Did you see the links I posted? Those seem to work for everyone with the problem you are experiencing.
This is from one of the links. "If you are using Parallel as a Windows platform, you need to specify that it is a Windows USB connection instead of Mac"

I don't use ProScan so have no idea at how hard it drives the serial port when running natively under Windows.
The problem has nothing to do with software driving the serial port. The serial port isn't opened at this point. Parallels needs a simple config. change.

Yes I understand this but what I was seeing in OPs posts in that Uniden was listed in the USB/COM but ProScan was not connecting. This is often because software (Scan125 .... Proscan? ..... other) attempts to dynamically find the scanner. So if one has multiple scanners the software looks for the appropriate target by send specific query commands to each of the attached devices looking for the required response on a port as the ports that are not in use a queried. If there is a COMs issue (for whatever reason) then the target scanner will never be found which is what I think the OP was experiencing?
