its usually the county fathers, or the sheriff himself that pushes for encryption. and it boils down to two reasons why. # 1-they dont want the people to know what their ( the cops ) are doing as in bad language, ethnic slurs, talking how many times a cop hit someone with a night stick, how long that they go out of service at a dunkin donuts ect, ect, ect. # 2-they dont want people listening to drug busts, warrant service, swat situations. i totaly agree with # 2, but no law enforcement agency is doing that 24-7. most encrypted radios have a switch on the radio to encrypt or not encrypt. go to your next city and county counsel meeting and ask them "WHY". i did that very same thing several years ago and i brought along with me about 35 or 40 people with me all wondering about the same thing. the county supervisor was replaced ( fired ) and about 6 months later the sheriff was replaced. 3 months after that the encryption was turned off, and now only the dispatcher can turn on or off. then it was found out that the county supervisor made the desion without input from the concel.
