I live in Columbus, Indiana and have a BCD396XT. I had a friend program the radio for me, works fine. I am not really a big listener of police, but use the scanner more when the weather is bad or the power is out. Most people know about police but when it comes to the electric company or highway department they get lost, and I get lost just turning the radio on. How is the best way to find someone in my local area that can help me get this scanner programmed to receive what I am looking for and not everything else? My email is clarence_gates@yahoo.com

A very simple thing you can do is press the HOLD key and then rotate the selector knob to a channel you are interested in hearing (assuming it has been programmed in) then you will only hear that channel and not the others. Another thing you can do is select the channels you DON'T want to head and press the L/O key which will lock them out of the scan mode.

Ultimately, I think the best way to program the radio is via a computer, using a program like bctool (bcTool). This will allow you do download all of the systems, talkgroups and frequencies for your area from the radioreference database, and then to select which ones you want or don't want to hear.
