Does the BCD436HP scanner decode encrypted traffic or does it stay silent? Just wondering, only heard limited clear traffic on it, but no "white noise "of DES type traffic....

No scanner can decode encrypted traffic. Most of the Uniden scanners, including the 436HP, skip encrypted traffic. It may stop very briefly on a transmission, then find it is encrypted and move on so quickly you never notice it pausing briefly.

Occasionally, for whatever reason, it may not recognize the transmission as encrypted, and then you would hear the 'noise'. But that is rare.

The Whistler database scanners have the option to play either a 'busy' tone (like you would hear on a phone call), or the actual noise, or silence, but you do not have such a choice on the Uniden scanners. If you 'parked' the scanner on the encrypted talkgroup or conventional frequency, you would see an "enc" (encrypted) on the display.

You would only hear a digital white noise if listening with an analog receiver. Encrypted random bits going into the audio decoder sounds more like Donald Duck trying to rap in Esperanto while under the combined effects of weed, meth, and acid.

It decodes it, to be able to tell that it is encrypted, but doesn't unencrypt it and it stays silent.

We hope that it in future firmwares will be a user selectable choise to skip or not to skip the transmission so that the scanner would be able to show the TG and UID for logging purposes.

On older scanners, such as the x96 vintage, on ADP encryption, I would hear unintelligible and annoying noise. On later model scanners, I don't even try to program encrypted channels.
