Big Lots (Odd Lots) has the Southern Telecom, Uniden branded, UMP418 at Big Lots this week for $15, for those interested.

All-in-all, not bad for $15. MP3, 4GB internal memory, USB charge/interface, audio record to MP3, Video record/Camera 2MP, picture display, video playback. User interface is a little unfriendly at first, be not bad to learn.

Battery charge time is about 3~4 hours, about 8 hours play time for audio.

Comes in various colors as well as black, with a set of earbuds and a USB stub cable.

Sound is on a par with an iPod.

There are various ihome brand accessories that work with it also. Like speakers and audio docking stations.

Interesting, I know that it is a branded product, but does Uniden have anything to do with the making or selling of them? What do they get out of having their name on it.

My guess would be that you market your company name on a product that would have minimal development and engineering work, and have it manufactured for a percentage of the total sales. Something Uniden and Gre have been doing with Radio Shack for years as a OEM. In this case Southern Telecom is the OEM, or Original Equipment Manufacturer.

I forgot to mention, the UMP418 has a MicroSD card slot for external storage up to 32GB.

Discovered something not mentioned in the user guide today. It appears the player will also play FLAC format files.

I purchased one of these units and was incredibly disappointed - it took at least 48 hours to charge it and at that, it would only come up to 3/4 charge indicated; I at best, I could get only about 45 minutes playback time.
I got fed up with it, pounded it flat with a hammer and put it in the garbage where it belonged.
