You've seen the basic model that Ian implemented
Ian proposed this feature for Ftrunk on the FTrunk_users Yahoo! list in August of 2003. I couldn't comment on it until January of 2004. Read messages #105, 371, and 372 to see why. I saw the TrunkView implementation (looks a lot like Netdraw) some months ago but have not seen how FTrunk does this.

It works well until there are a lot of datapoints (something US monitors will see more than European ones). The 2D representation becomes difficult to interpret when cluttered and a 3D representation can sometimes help a bit there.
Skyrails is definitely slower with more complex graphs. There are tricks around this like 3D with alpha channel weighted colors; collapsing equivalently connected nodes into one. That is an art and science all to itself.

Have a look at http://www.visualcomplexity.com/vc/ for lots of examples (wish I'd found that site a long time ago!)
Cool. I'll take a look.

Is the output generated in real time?
No. The author of skyrails has openly discussed supporting this in the future. The export file is a one-click snapshot of the site history. Some tools for filtering the data further will be needed to avoid overwhelming the chosen visualization tool.

Great stuff. Can't wait for this to come out. Been off trunk decoders for a bit now. Bit sick of looking at DOS style interfaces.
This is a great improvement. Looking forward to the release when it comes out Rick!!!

I have to agree 100% about the DOS style interfaces...can't wait for this new version!

How about throwing it out there for some alpha testing ? And while I'm chasing that dream, maybe toggle on the EDACS support :)

Neat. I've been off decoders for a while because of the command prompt interface, too.

Not to be a picky axxhole, but the output example you show on the first page of this thread looks, TO ME, like DOS-style output in a Windows tabbed frame. Colored letters on the black background and all.

I hope this is just user-preference??

I really liked the old Windows Trunker style interface... but that's just me.

I'm with your Peter. Gone off trunker/Unitrunker because I too got sick of looking at the DOS style user interface. The new one looks good, but hopefully Rick will be able make changing the colours a user slectable feature...

L>ooking forward to getting back to using Unitrunker agian when this is released.

Contrary to some of you, I actually prefer the DOS style interface - or at the very least I have no problem with it. I noticed that the Win version looks somewhat 'DOSish' but this should make a transition to Windows much easier for some people.

I think it's a great piece of software no matter how ya slice it.

A black background does not equal DOS as seen here. One unexpected advantage of the DOS style window was the ability to run at full screen mode. You can easily read the whole display from across a dark room. Look at some of the pics posted under the "Pictures of Your Shack/Mobile Setup" forum; the folks running Unitrunker almost always choose full screen mode - probably for this reason.

It is. Light text on black just happens to be one of the more readable / high contrast color themes.

The other advantage of a black background - DOS or Windows - is the reduced glow. This is particularly useful when driving in your car after dark with a laptop on the front passenger seat. Next time you're driving at night - power up the laptop and open Notepad full screen (normally a white background). It's like driving around with the car dome light on.

Count me as one who is glad that we're not losing the black background I've become used to. Changing all my color labels would be a chore!

I have NO problem with that SCREEN looks like. Call it DOS, call it a black background, call it whatever. I do have a problem with the way the keyboard commands work. It has nothing to do with DOS, it just doesn't have a good "feel" to me.

Screen & Interface

I'm happy with the look of the screen. I like Trunker, and UniTrunker looks almost as good (as stated, it helps to expand the window), though UniTrunker has a few less characters available for labelling.

I really like the Trunker H - G - I key functionality, it's tremendously faster when trying to edit during an incident where all those "new" IDs start popping up.

That's my only real beef with UniTrunker... the lack of tagging space compared to Trunker.... Especially if you import your existing group/radio data from trunker and your labels all get chopped off. Other than that, it's a super program.

The new unitrunker looks great, I can't wait until I get to play with it. Any idea on when we might expect to see the new release?

Hey Rick,

How's this coming along? I've been drooling since you started to post the screen shots at the beginning of the year. Right now I have 3 computers dedicated to scanning (1 for ScanStar Spectrum Commander, 2 for UniTrunker - running at full screen), with this program, I can potentially reduce the amount of computers to one! :D

Keep up the good work!!

I just stumbled upon this... All I can say is wow... I really like UniTrunker and the new version looks to be a lot easier to use (not that the current one is hard just took some getting used to).

I know its been asked a million times but is there any update on the ETA of this great program?

I just wandered across your program while looking up some info on the Volusia County EDACS system here in FL. Took me a little while to figure out the discriminator tap points on my radio, but with this tool/toy scanning the VC system has been transformed phenomenally. Thanks for your work! I look forward to the new version when it comes out. Would this be the place to watch and see when new versions are implemented?
