When the radio sits with an open mic, you already have the ID rather than having to wait for the disconnect. Takes a little getting used to as it requires a second before the voice transmits. An option often is to have a PTT tone that you wait to end before transmitting.

Yes, I am very very familiar. I have always been a stickler to having the long tone pre-ID because it lets you know if you bump the mic and prevents you from talking too soon. What I was saying is why departments use both pre and post MDC in the same transmission like New Hartford Fire, Barkhamsted East Car 10.

I hear users tell me that the pre-tone takes away from time they could be using the radio. 300-500ms. Total BS in my book.

If the radios are programmed correctly the post ID gives a chirp when you un-key, many departments like that on the fire ground channels as you can tell when someone is done talking, Sort of like FDNY does (but a totally different way) People listing on a scanner hate it because they hear both squawks and its annoying, but believe it or not radios are not programmed for the scanner listener they are programmed for the public safety user

Motorola used to be good in the old days, but now they streamlined all their radios. No selection of radios. Kenwood I think has come so far and has many more features, hence the departments going with the Viking Series

I can assure you the radio's pictured were purchased based entirely upon cost, it had nothing to do with features or economics

One point I wanted to ask when it was mentioned that all county departments need to have, pre MDC1200...

What is the point of having pre and post selected?

I know it would take a lot of work, but all county departments should have all the same portables and mobiles. Then one vendor could go around with one codeplug and reprogram them all instead of being in this situation. I knew something wasn't right when I tuned in after the last deadline and heard North Canaan Ambulance still with their post ID's
If they were a county department, that may be plausible. Not here though.
