Updating 996T

I just purchased a 996T that has 1.03.11 firmware. I plan to update, but I'm genuinely curious why this registration process is necessary to accomplish this?

Perhaps UPMan would be kind enough to share the inside story regarding the logic behind this process?

The intention originally was to have "pay-per-view" upgrades with fancy new features etc. that you could chose whether to take advantage of or not. In the end they just never utilized it and all updates were free.
