I have heard that they joined the DOJ system (FBI) and one freq that has been suspect in that system is 167.6125 here in S. FL. This is yet to be confirmed. USM also uses Prison Bureau freqs up around 170 MHz. P25 transmissions here in FL use NAC 293.

Here in the Detroit area the main repeater is 164.600 (NAC 293). I hear them often on a few of the FBI repeaters running license plate checks also.

BTW, 164.600 encrypted 100% of the time.

To elaborate: 170.7500 typically used for Courts. In dense areas I've seen 170.7375 used also. Only seen it once. I've seen them use (in CA) a variety of uncommon channels I haven't seen anywhere else.

I program most all of my P25 stuff as "Search", so I'll get whatever NAC they use, but this was a good find. In the analog days I heard them using PL 136.5 on this freq, so the numbers make sense, and my intel of joining the DOJ system also makes sense, but they still use their old freqs for direct simplex.

170.7500 is the Fed Courthouse in Miami and I decoded NAC 001 on that repeater, but I have heard USMS up in my neck of the woods using direct mobile simplex with NAC293. In the past I have heard USMS use this direct with PL 136.5, so the numbers add up again.

This is solid info.

The only thing I do not get much of is this "any hours" USMS activity you see on "Manhunters". So far they have been a 8 - 5 operation and nothing more. Maybe they only do that in NY/NJ? I have to wait for "Lenny" and "Meechy" to come down here.

Yes, they actually started back in 2006 or so. The document linked below provides some details:

What I haven't known is if they were just using the same channels with unique call signs, of using different NAC's or tones.

Assumed they were handout interop. radios. 25 Cities Project freqs. were in heavy use w/ NAC653 enc.

USM is digital and FBI is mostly analog in Chicago, it will be interesting when the feebs replace their analog with digital.

What I think happened is that they use the FBI dispatcher for support and background checks. I also think that is the repeater channel(s) now. That is how I heard it when it was analog a couple of years ago. I have not heard any USM "dispatcher" on the old freqs for many years. Most of the old channels are still in use for simplex here in FL. 163.2000 and 162.7125 have yet to be heard with P25. Since all the other old analog channels are now P25, I would bet these are still active as well.

So is this the national pattern here? One or two freqs tied to the FBI with NAC293 for repeater and support, and the old USM channels as simplex/tac? That is the way it is looking to me.

Just curious -- how did you confirm that the activity you heard on 167.6125/NAC 293 was USMS?

They use the DOJ Interop in NYC if that's of any assistance.

167.6125 I would have to say is probably FBI. The NAC of 293 does get used on some of their stuff. I have heard 293 & 167 used.

Also, if you heard someone identify as a "Marshal" it still could be an FBI repeater. I have heard Marshals on FBI repeaters before running plate checks.

Both PL 136.5 and NAC293 are known USM codes. I have some other credible sources that told me how it works, but not where it was freq wise as they did not know or care. They just use it! That is enough for me. Done deal!

I've read that the Miami FBI District radio callsign is KEV300. Maybe that's what the "300" refers to???

Yes...300 is FBI.

No, 167.9 was not used. I put that PL in the scan for that whole group for many years and heard nothing. One day I was open searching when I discovered the PL 136.5 repeater. I started to listen close at that time. Prior to that I noticed a major slowdown on the USM channels.

Since then I have heard from a "source" that they are digital and on the DOJ system. And from what I have heard this is the second major change for USM in recent years. The analog DOJ migration was the first, P25 the second. At the same time traffic slowed down on the old USM freqs with the lack of a USM dispatcher, this one became active. It all adds up.

Here is how I see it...there is a reason the PL and NAC is different. Someone made that decision for a reason. The FBI is maintaining the repeater, no doubt. And they are providing the dispatch point, but in this area they may want to keep things compartmentalized so that FBI has their own channels and USM has theirs. The old USM channels are still active with simplex and NAC293. Again, it adds up.

There is so little in the clear these days that it is hard to hear anything like a call sign, but from what I do hear on FBI channels with NAC 167 it has been Charlie and Echo call signs (maybe a Tango every once in a while). I wish I still lived in Broward County so I could hear more. I have to wait for the tropo openings to hear stuff down there, but that happens a fair amount.

Thanks for the explanation Phil, and posts from others. I hope the information I glean from USM/FBI comments will help me more quickly understand possible anomalies when the analog to digital conversion takes place in my area.

With all the public and private corruption occuring in Illinois, maybe Federal resources are so strapped that it may delay the analog to digital conversion !!!
