    If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Is the USB programming wire actually enumerating when you plug it in to the computer? What does it say in your device manager when you plug / unplug it?

Best solution I have found for older radios (I have several) is older computer with true serial port, windows 7 32 bit or older, and a serial cable. My oldest CPS only runs in DOS, not even a DOS box.

RSS = Dos.
CPS = Windows.

Gross oversimplification, but it's 99% accurate.

Lets make sure the device actually shows up in the device manager first, walk before run.

Hey man I literally just had the same issue and managed to resolve it yesterday. Uninstall CPS & completely remove anything that has to do with it (ASTRO 25 portable, tuner, etc..), restart pc, do a fresh install of everything, restart again, load the software and then try hooking up the radio. The USB drivers are downloaded when you install CPS so after days of trying to troubleshoot the issue I just did a complete uninstall/reinstall.

Hope this helps.

First issue is Vista! Lol. All serious, Vista and M radios never got along great. The best thing to do is what slobonmycob said, dump everything (including the USB drivers) and reinstall it all from scratch. I have never had a problem running ASTRO25 on XP and it is extremely stable compared to Vista. It will work on Win7 too (though it is finicky on 64 bit PCs).

Never had an issue programming xts3000’s 5000’s or even mts2000’s all using Vista 32bit on my old Thinkpad T61.
Sometimes I find that it takes a LONG time for it to find a driver for a ribless USB cable, but once the drivers are found, there is no connection issues.

I think the issue is centered around third party programming cables... mine worked fine after doing a complete uninstall/reinstall of the CPS suite. Small price to pay for an inexpensive programming cable =)

check to see if they enumerate in the device manager as Prolific USB to Serial device.

It’s an XTS5000, not a MTS2000

For those that have ‘reacted’ my post, I should have quoted @jaspence post above mine. His advice is pretty much useless for the XTS1500/2500/5000 radios. They are not what I consider an ‘older’ Motorola radio, and program just fine on most modern hardware

Are you using Professional Radio CPS? Is the comm port set to USB. The comm port is set for COM1 as default. It needs to be manually set to USB under EDIT>Preferences>COMM PORT SETTINGS.

Professional Radio CPS isn’t used to program XTS-5000 radios :rolleyes:
You are right, it's Astro 25 portable. Got my CPS mixed up. Been working in everything from m1225 software to APX the last couple weeks. It's all running together.
