USB serial interfaces and programming software

It seems that there's a good deal of interest, not to mention pure confusion, about which USB interfaces work well with folks using scanner software on laptops. Would there be any interest in compiling, say a simple spreadsheet, with names of software, and those USB interfaces that are known to work? At a minimum, I could see 5 major columns;

a. Software (Win96, Scan Control, Scancat, ect.)

b. Make of interface (Radio Shack, ect.)

c. Model number

d. Number of supported ports

e. Operating systems supported

Opinions? Additional comments? This could develop into quite a useful little document, given that many newer laptops have dropped serial ports in favor of USB 73s Mike

USB Programming with an old dos program

I haave set up my windows 7 to dual boot into xp. The sofware starts up fine when I plug the rj14 into yhe radio it says promgram on the radio. But I can't read the radio. Do I need to f8 at the begening at the xp boot to go to dos? And if I do what dos driver would use to give the USB cable a com 1 or 2. I have renamed these in devices to com1 but I was also running the software in win xp. Not in dos.

If you are in DOS, and not just the command prompt of some Windows O/S, then you will NOT have USB support. I believe the first O/S to support USB was Windows98. USB is not even supported in NT4.0.

However, if you have a COM port AND you have an older COM version scanner cable AND you are programming an older scanner (PRO-97 for example), that could work. But what software are you using? Win97, etc requires Windows. ??

2 Way Radio programming

I'm trying to program a Kenwood TK-840 For ham use. Using a usb and rj14. I think Id I get to an old dos prompt with a usb dos driver it may work.
