If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello all!

I have 2 UV-82HP's that I've had for about a year. I have had them set up using CHIRP with the same channelsets and I decided today that I wanted to eliminate some of the channels for now. So I re-downloaded CHIRP, pulled up my config file for the radio, edited the channels. I cannot get them to download into the radios now. I can download from one of the radio's but for some reason CHIRP thinks it is a VHF only unit and won't let me put UHF frequencies in the file (It does detect the model correctly as UV-82). I can upload a config to that radio as long as I do not try and put UHF frequencies into it. The other radio, wont download or upload, period. I don't get it. I have tried about 4 different cable drivers but I have used this cable with the same PC before and USB ports without issue. Any advise is appreciated.

Alright, I'm going to answer my first problem so it might help others. I used the Baofeng OEM software from their website and downloaded from the radio. There was nothing on it as I had done a factory reset. I checking to make sure the frequencies should have been unlocked, I uploaded the same file unchanged back to the radio. I then downloaded the radio to CHIRP and was able to write the new frequencies to the radio with CHIRP without issue.

Now problem number 2. Radio number 2 will not upload or download to CHIRP or factory software. I get an error message and the radio restarts. I have tried factory resetting the radio to no avail. This is the same cable/driver/software/USB port used with radio number 1 which I was able to make work. I have tried unplugging and re-plugging, holding the cable in different positions, removing the batter, nothing. Just restarts the radio every time I hit "read" or "write." Any ideas?

I have the same issue on occasion, I have Baofeng UV-5RA and a GT-5TP. I first make sure of the com port. Device manager and look at ports to make sure which com port to use. I sometimes have to turn the radio off and on, or make sure that the cable is pushed all the way into the radio. If that doesn't help I will use a different usb port on the computer and change the com port to match. I have to use the UV-82HP settings to program my GT-5TP. Hope this helps.

your usb was probably changed effecting chirp during a windows update effecting the CHIRP connection to your radio.

Over on MIKLOR web page they talked about this issue and how to re-enable the chirp drivers for the uv5 which also applies to the uv82.

You need to go to windows device manager, then to com port and then find on your computer the correct drivers/dll files for that radio and re-install them, over on the uv5 page at Miklor they talk about this problem and walk you thru fixing this for the uv5r which is the same as the uv82 models.

This is why i turn windows auto update off because this happened to me several times a year on me.
