They still use the Federal Spectrum. And Yes, some use Nextels

I have found them in the VHF-High [162-174] and the UHF [460-420] bands.
Some still Analog, others P-25 and P-25/ENC

Based upon the size, you should be able to find radio traffic.

Leavenworth, KS VA is 163.0875 P25 digital for police and fire. All comms were originally encrypted, but they've gotten tired of that and many if not most are now in the clear. And pretty boring. I only checked them out when they were encrypted.

I don't know about Iowa City, but a the others have said, they generally do use federal frequencies if they have their own radio system. Some VA Medical Centers have opted for leasing space on other radio systems. In the Portland, Oregon area, the VA Medical Facilities in both Portland and Vancouver, Washington are using the area 800 MHz public safety trunked system.

Unfortunately there is no hard and fast rule for the VA as far as radios. You just have to check around and see if you can find them If you can stop by the VA facility and maybe see what type of radios are around.

Biloxi MS VA hospital can be found on 163.3625, P25 in the clear.

What's strange though is the coverage this system has. I am in Mobile AL, and listening to them on a 396t with a whip antenna while sitting inside my house: And getting 5 bars on the s-meter.

Why they need such a large coverage area I have no idea.

168.5250 NAC293 ANN ARBOR VA
413.8500 ANN ARBOR VA PAGING
170.6000 NAC293 SAGINAW VA HOSPITAL
411.0750 NAC293 DETROIT VA HOSPITAL

All of the traffic I have heard is the police/security ops on those freqs. I have been told most of the maintenance people are switching to nextel/cell phones.
