I was just reading an old thread (circa 2007?) about a meet up that was arranged for N. Virginia. It got me thinking, what is everyone's thoughts on a big meetup somewhere in the middle of the state? I make a trip from the Eastern Shore to Roanoke every few months, so for me, the trip wouldn't be that bad and I probably have the longest way to go out of most.

I used to be part of the Roanoke group (now defunct, I think) and we even had a group going for a while in Tidewater, but that fell apart. It would be nice to do one big meetup to see everyone face to face.

Thoughts? Suggestions for a location?

Hi Jason: I remember meeting you at the Frostfest one year. Perhaps that would be a good venue to either get a table or rent a room. Tables are cheap, we would probably need Blanton's blessing to use the RR name on display. Somebody in Richmond might help facilitate it? Last year the GRE/Alinco people had a table and there was always a crowd there.

PM sent.

I would prefer an alternate venue or better, I would like to see us go somewhere non-radio related. A venue that could provide a large private room and food would be my first choice.

I take the silence on this thread to be a sign that no one is interested in this sort of thing?

I'd certainly be interested in a meet-up, as long as it's not hours away from me.

There is also a group (Central Virginia Radio Enthusiasts) that meets at the LaPrade Library in Chesterfield County (near Richmond) quarterly. The meetings usually aren't that big; maybe six to ten people present.

Very interesting, I'm literally a few miles down the road from that library and had no idea there were such meetings!

I'd also be willing to participate in such a get together but no venue comes to mind.

I would definitely be interested in something like that. Hold it in a room at the Wood Grill Buffet (or some place like that) and you'll have people showing up. Have food will travel! Make sure we bring out scanners and compare notes! This would be kind of fun! Let me know what you work out. I have too much going on to be able to help organize right on, but let me know!

Great! Glad to see some good discussion on this!

I would vote for somewhere geographically central to the state. I don't really consider Richmond to be central, but I guess that is because I used to live in Roanoke and I know the trip from that end of the state to Richmond is much longer than from Tidewater to Richmond.

Thoughts on somewhere like Farmville? Lynchburg?

I would love to hear from any one towards the TN border that might consider coming. Those folks would have a decent drive as well and I think they would appreciate a more geographically central location.

When I think Central Virginia, I think more around the red X in the attached map/image:

Seems Reasonable

That area marked with 'X' certainly seems reasonable. Let us know what you want to do.

I friend of mine that I keep up to day with the goings on here, might be willing to travel down there with me for a day trip.

The X is perfect for me i am only an hour away. My only concern is that I am sure it would be better near an interstate like 64 near charlottesville yat would enable Richmond,Tidewater and people from interstate 81 corder great access but that is just my thoughts we used the bonanza once in chville for an informal meeting place bvut i dont even know if its still there or not donna

Well, both Farmville and Lynchburg are just off of 460. It's not a major interstate, but is a major highway going through the state. Makes almost a straight shot across the middle of the state, basically dumping out at Roanoke. That makes it easy for those in that area, either get right on 460 or take 81 from the north or south to 460. 460 runs right through Suffolk, so that pretty much takes care of Tidewater.

29 runs from Charlottesville, right through Lynchburg and even picks up Danville on the south end.

Lynchburg is sounding like a good option to me. Farmville is the most center, that I can see on the map. There are plenty of things in Farmville to work with.

Sorry, no Bonanza, that was a LOONGG time ago. There is Golden Corral and Wood Grill Buffet.

Actually, the X looks like it is closer to Appomattox. But there are many places in Lynchburg too.

Appomattox is a good option to consider as well! Not too big, but still big enough to have some places to choose from.

There is a Pino's Pizza in Appomattox that might be an option. I'm assuming the majority would like a fairly laid back setting, with room and decent food. I could call and inquire about room, possibly a private room or area that we could use as a group.

I think some place like Charlottesville would be the best choice. 64/29 makes it easy to get to from most places in the state. I know I'd be up for it but I'm only 30 minutes away.
