I just downloaded ver 1.89. When attempting to access the scanner, the program gives an error message that it is unable to open USB <> Radio scanner cable. I followed the instructions to update the cable driver which had been done previously. Did it again just for sport I suppose. No luck. Continued on the update the driver thru Virtual COM Port Drivers

Again no luck. The program is not giving me the option to select a com port in the configuration setting. There is no drop down for this option.

This is getting very frustrating. I love the program but lately it has become a chore to operate.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this issue.

As the previous person suggested, the few who do experience difficulty jump right on the board and ask for help- it is always available, free flowing and in my experience 100% accurate. It seems windows is the problem not the scanner programming software. Sharing resources has long been a windows problem.

I don't think anyone could ask for a better resource in solving problems as there is on this board.

I am also having problems.

I am using a PSR600 w/ the GRE USB cable provided & V1.84 on an XP SP3 with NET 2.0 SP3. I have reloaded XP and reloaded the CDM USB for XP drivers. Initially the unit ran for about 2 weeks and froze. I have to reboot the computer each time and now the WIN500 runs about a day and freezes.

This began for me when I had to update and add NET with V1.84 on the XP.

Since this problem with the XP began, I, purchased another PSR600 and have that unit connected to a Vista Home Premium 32 bit system using V1.89 of WIN500. I also installed the CDM USB for Vista drivers provided. The Data Execution Prevention is disallowed for this program. This system freezes up at least once a day.

Any Ideas?

Indeed it appears that the Data Execution Prevention is interfering with WIN500. Below is how one user remedied the problem. Perhaps you could give that a try on your Vista machine.

The culprit on my 32 bit Vista machine was Data Execution Prevention, which is set to OptOut by default. Once I added Win500 to the OptOut list, Win500 1.88 came up immediately and ran fine (including interfacing with the RR web service).

To opt a program out of Data Execution Prevention, go to Control Panel->System->Advanced System Settings. Click the Settings button under Performance, then click on the Data Execution Prevention tab.

You have a choice of turning on DEP only for essential Windows programs and services or turning on DEP for all programs except those you select (this was the default setting on my system). Once I added Win500 to the exception list, the crashes went away.

I'm a little confused on your XP machine:
  1. Are you saying you completely reloaded the XP operating system from the ground up?
  2. Did you update WIN500 to V1.89 on this XP machine?

Thanks for your response.

I read the DEP issue and just checked the Vista machine to make sure WIN500 is in the list and checked which it is. I deleted WIN500.exe from the DEP and then reestablished WIN500.exe in the DLP. I will see what happens although why would the operation change?

With the XP system, it was reloaded then updated to SP3. No I have not used WIN500 V1.89 on it.

I have been thinking about going back to V1.72 and see what happens.

Win500 / computer issue

I am not trying to beat a dead horse just trying to resolve my problem. The Win500 program that stops working anywhere between 2 hours and 2 weeks.

I went back to V1.72 and am still having the same issues. I have since obtained a second PSR-600 to try. I now have one on the XP SP3 and one on the Vista 64 bit system and they act identically.

I have also reloaded the Vista operating system then reloaded the Win500 program and the updated drivers from the GRE website.

I have updated the latest Firmware Ver 1.7 to both radios.

During the lastest lockup on the XP I deceided to experiment. If I tried to stop the Monitor / Control panel I would get the hourglass symbol and nothing would happen. I needed to use CTRL ALT DEL to quit the program. After I did this I tried to restart the Monitor / Control function without rebooting the computer and got the following error message:

"unable to open the port //./com4 - 5: comport is in use".

I then deceided to unplug the radio from the com port and try to again start the Monitor / Control function.
This time I got this error message:

"unable to open the port //./com4 - 2: com 4 does not exist".

I then plugged the USB cable back into the computer and tried to start the Monitor / Control feature and it ran?

I have also contacted GRE support, they have nothing to offer.
Its almost like the USB connection is held open after the program locks up.

Any direction would be appreciated.

The problem I had was related to the software for my PDA hotsync. It, for some reason was keeping the com port open even when the PDA software was not in use. I disabled the PDA software and the win500 began to work just fine.

I am not sure how to tell what other programs or devices are sharing that port.
