Don't have much salt in Missouri though do have ice.
Which, when it's on the roads, is treated with salt. That salt gets into the air along with industrial pollutants. Your air may be more corrosive than you think.

those of us that have done this for a living for decades know what works and what lasts

and we also know that any antenna company that uses the non- existant "isotropic radiator" for their gain reference is trying to mislead the public

you see you can't buy a isotropic radiator no matter how much money you have

and not even NASA can build one

so its the same as saying your antenna has 11.5 db gain over a
UNICORN

quite meaningless

this is why commercial antenna companies use gain over a DIPOLE

if you doubt their figures its a simple matter to prove since any rank novice can easily build a dipole

gain over a" factory duck" is another rediculous reference today

every factory duck is different at different

so AGAIN, this is merely a marketing ploy that is meaningless

I install repeater antennas on 300 plus foot towers on the top of remote mountain tops so I only use PROVEN antenna designs

I don't like to pay 2 thousand dollars for a climbing company because of some poorly made import antenna

Hustlers are the ONLY ham antennas that rise to commercial grade so they are the ONLY ham antennas allowed on any of my towers

I prefer that ham clubs purchase DB products dipoles, Sinclair, etc, but the Hustler antennas I've allowed have never needed replaced and some have been there since the early 90s

Hmmm, dBi is a valid measurement and reference for comparison. While the use of it in advertising may be to mislead although it may as easily not be, it is quite commonly used for example in EIRP calculations. So it's not really a comparison to a unicorn, in fact you can compare dBi and dBd knowing the standard value for dBd which is in itself, only a reference. I think it's fair to teach folks that since both are commonly used.
Now, I have seen many an ad for antennas that claim gain in dB. THAT is confusing hype! You need a reference... be it an isotropic radiator or a dipole! :)

Hello , and TNX so much for the great information. As i mentioned above I tend to lean toward the DB rateings. The two rateings are the only rateings I know to gage the antennas by, other than the physical characteristics of any of them. The antenna want be exposed to weather so that will not be an issue.
I have bought antennas in the past that were repersented by a DBI. Just none of them were a vertical base station.antenna. They worked out fine , but that was years ago. (There was no internet at that time)

But, there is one gage that is the best way to check out any of them..
And that is to chat with other Hams about there experiences with the antennas and the sharing of that knowledge can go along way.

And R&R is great place to start.

There is nothing better than a live test .

One of my main worries is the Quality Control 0f the assembly of the product and if all the parts are in the package. I read alot of bad reviews on alot of these antennas and many of them are the same kind of issues.shared between them.
I guess its the nature of the besast, just have to deal with it.
TNX again

Hello smason. I checked out Cushcraft for a Duel Band base station antenna (2 Meter & 440 Mhz)
I have used there products in the past and have no problum with them.
The only Vertical Duel Band antennas I have found they have is the Ringo line of antennas. Those really are not what I am looking for.

Cool. I was just surprised to see no mention of them at all. I know I see a buttload of Ringos on towers around here.
