I tried accessing the forums this morning and was met with a notice that my VPN's IP had been banned. Is there a new rule against VPN's or something I'm unaware of? It's just best security practices in 2025 to use one.

Thanks!

RR working fine with my VPN, Surfshark.

You might change your vpn server location and see if it works then.

A LOT of people use VPNs to circumvent restrictions and/or do any number of bad things. I have no clue if RR blocks any specific VPN blocks or not, but I'm fairly certain that the platform has likely seen its share of maliciousness from those accessing over VPNs - would not surprise if some are blocked. I'm not sure whose idea it is that running all your traffic over VPN is best security practices, in 2025 or any other year. Doesn't prevent anything bad from happening to you. It only prevents your true Ip from being tracked.

I use VPNs all the time, work specific, to access work material from home. I never use a VPN just to surf the web. If I'm going to get nailed by something malicious, no VPN software is going to stop that from happening.

I underlined the pertinent statement.

Investigating the IP address of people who try to spam the forums is a routine part of the moderator's role here. And, we see IPs from all over the world. Sometimes, those investigations result in IP addresses being banned.

To resolve situations where a specific IP address has been banned, I suggest you ask your VPN to provide you with a different IP address, use a different VPN, or don't use a VPN at all (though I recognize that may not be what you want to do).

So ordered, working fine now. Sucks some bad actors always ruin things for the rest of us. Thanks Bob.

We don't explicitly block users who use a commercial VPN, but our security software solutions will often challenge or block VPN users because they are often intentionally hiding who they are.

Unpopular opinion: VPNs are a scam, a way to extract money from you through scare tactics, and provide you zero security. I don't use any commercial VPN services whatsoever.

If anything the VPN companies are siphoning data off of you for resell.

The only legitimate useful use of a VPN is to tunnel back into your own private network or your company's network. Period. End of story.

If you are using a commercial VPN to access the internet, I'm silently judging you as someone who fell victim to a cable news network scare commercial and thus subjecting you to numerous blocks, captcha challenges, and country restrictions unnecessarily - or you are intentionally hiding or obfuscating your IP address and location for reasons other than "your own security"

Norton VPN gets me through to most everything I need. Maybe I’m paranoid, but my ID has been stolen several times, and I’m using every trick in the book to stop it happening again.

Easy to track your IP accessing commercial VPNs if LE needs to, with the appropriate legal process, including those outside the U.S.

As others have said...hide your true IP when your kids play Roblox, hide your IP from Lindsey so he can captcha you to death and direct you to other sites, or tunnel back to home (which is the intended use).

I actually have all my repeaters on a Mesh VPN tied back to my home. Home network on different VLANs for IoT, Cameras, Guest, etc. Repeater sites on different RFC 1918 and even the devices at the site are on a separate VLANs which blocks inter-VLAN traffic with firewalls, IDS/IPS etc.

Exactly, the misunderstandings about what VPINs actually do is too common the same way people's understanding of what cloud computing does when it comes to security and vulnerabilities are
I don't use my cloud storage, even I'm not THAT dumb. Did think VPN's protected me. Any way to close that hole? My ID has been stolen several times, like to keep that from happening again.Got 8 letters in the mail same day a few years ago welcoming me to 8 Florida banks, with all 8 having a secondary address in Chicago. THAT was a bad day!

Except VPNs don't do anything to stop that. Information can be obtained from many sources, I'd be more wary of things like social media, or malware infesting your devices (which can happen whether one uses a VPN or not).

Well I guess I'm ok then, I don't do any social media and I scan my machines regularly.

This is a forum, one of 2 I go on. Gotta have some contact. And all those other- uh, no. I have Norton Antivirus with some other admins, even logging on here requires extra steps anymore. Like I said, gotta have some contact.

Clearly not if you've had your ID stolen several times. 👀💀

Had you asked, I would have told you that the ID thefts were in the past and and I have invested in as many ways as possible to protect myself. But, you, the "database admin" , never bothered, you just chose to take a cheap shot at someone who was trying to learn. Which, I have noticed, is pretty much par for the course for most of the experienced people on this forum. You all just try to make sure you can run your little fiefdom and anyone who dares show a bit of ignorance when they ask questions is handled roughly and from what I've seen , mostly driven away.

I've met several people here who have helped me anyway they can- for the most part, off this forum. Probably because they don't need the crap they would get from you pompous fools who just drive people away from radio in general. I think it's time to drop down to one forum, one where I don't get near the attitude from those who think they know everything continue to drive people away. Like the member who constantly berates people for asking questions, when it was probably Google who led them here. The member who graciously offered to remove a password from my radio in exchange for $100, because making money is more important than just helping.

Oh well, goodbye.
