I have been trying to program vx-160 vertex radio.Ihave donwloaded the program on my laptop was able to read from the radio but am having a problem writing to the radio.It keeps giving me a "error" message. I am using window vista I hear that my be the problem any ideas would be great.

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Your computer is probably too fast for the software, and it may not be getting along with the OS either. Could be COM port conflicts amongst other things. What software version are you using? What is your hardware configuration? Need more information.
I have a Pentium 75 IBM PC running Windows 95 that I use to run CE44 for the VX-160/VX-180 (rebooting in MS-DOS mode) and it works great. That's the thing with these older DOS-based programs, you can't have too much computer and need a fairly basic hardware configuration. Keeping things simple will really be a benefit for that kind of thing.

Programming with newer computers
I had the same problems and found that by opening up the device manager and tweaking the settings of the prolific drivers (USB cable for programing the VX160/180 uses this) the problems disappeared.
For windows open the control panel, go to system, device manager, then com ports, Open the device that shows your USB to serial port adaptor. Open it, go to port settings and lower the rate down to about 9600 bits. You can also go into the advanced settings and uncheck the use fifo buffer if the above does not fix your issue.
