Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

VX-1700 VFO Mode Issue

Hello everyone. I have a VX-1700 that has the VFO mode enabled. I can change frequencies using the keypad on the front of the radio or using the UP/DOWN buttons on the microphone. The frequency will not, however, change when I rotate the CH knob.

For instance, if the frequency on the display is 28.361.1, it changes back and forth between 28.361.1 and 28.362.1 as I turn the CH knob (the STEP size is 1 kHz). It doesn't matter whether I rotate the knob clockwise or counter-clockwise. The same thing happens in MEMORY and ITU modes.

I've tried using the CK-11 field programming key in the DATA jack, but it doesn't help. I'm wondering if something else needs to be enabled in the software, or if the CH encoder is broken. Any ideas? Thanks.

Just a GUESS. It sounds like the ch knob "encoder". Vertex/Yaesu had a few radios over the years that did that kind of crap.
I'm not sure if Yaesu stocks parts for these or not, but worth a try because of their low prices.

UPDATE: Problem solved.

The tiny (almost microscopic) ribbon cable that connects the VFO encoder board to the front panel circuit board had a bad
connection. I disconnected the ribbon cable and reinstalled it, making sure it was firmly in place at both ends...problem fixed.
