All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I know it meets certain milspec standards but can someone tell me if it’s water resistant? I’m looking at installing one on a side by side and don’t want to worry if it gets caught in the rain.

NMO's installed, while-u-wait.
I don't know if it's water resistant, but I'm running a Motorola CDM-1250 in a Polaris Ranger. It's been snowed on, rained on, lots of mud and hosed down pretty well. I mounted the RF deck in the glove box and only have the control head exposed. I put it a bit back under the dash so it doesn't get direct rainfall. Haven't had any issues with it in nearly 10 years.

I figure worst case is I'd have to replace the control head.

We've got a few others in the family, all running CDM-1250's, a few with GM-300's and one with an Icom F-320S. All have stood up well to the abuse they get.

thanks, I did not know those were remote-head capable. Is there a list somewhere of the mobiles that allow remote head mounting? That might make it easier for me haha

thanks. The website shows a lot of mil spec ratings but didn’t specifically say anything about water resistance.

The mil-spec ratings on their own don't mean much unless you know how they score on each category. A lot of the ham manufacturers will claim the Mil-Spec 810 ratings, but they don't always explain how they score.

As for which ones are remote head capable, that's probably a long list. For this kind of stuff, a Motorola CDM, a Kenwood TK-x180, and probably a few others would be good candidates.
The CDM's are pretty cheap on line, I've bought several CDM-750 (4 channel) for $50-$75. The higher channel counts with LCD display (CDM-1250 or CDM-1550) can run from $100 to $200. Remote head kits can be bought new for $80 or so.
Kenwood TK-x180's are a bit more pricey, but you can add the KRK-10 remote head kit and do what you want. The heads on the TK-x180's are smaller than the CDM's.

Another option….
In reality, I've discovered we don't change channels that often. Having the radio out and exposed isn't always necessary. I just set up my son's Polaris Ace 570 with the entire radio mounted in a Pelican type case (Harbor Freight knock off) and installed a circular water resistant connector for power, speaker and microphone. That way the entire radio is protected and only the microphone and speaker are out.

Or, just mount the whole thing in the glove box and just remote your mic and speaker out to where you need them.

We have mounted small pelican cases on the back of our side by sides to keep the radio in when not in use or parked at a trailhead unattended or whatnot. Protects the radio from the elements & theft. Mounting the radio under the dash as much as possible is a plus as well, and in most situations it should be protected from rain unless you're trolling around during a hurricane. Good luck.
