To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a vx-454. Trying to program it for paging for the fire dept. Well actually need to program it 2 different ways. First one would be able to page out the fire dept. other is we share our frequency with another dept so sleep at night is hard when they are getting paged out at 2am. I understand how tones and all work just cant figure out how to apply it to our radios.

our tones are a-389.0 and b-330.5 a-1sec b-3sec.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I have programmed dozens of VX-180s and VX-354s, but I'm having trouble getting 2 tone decode to work on the VX-459s. I can get the radios to turn on the alert light, but not sound the alert tone. I was having trouble getting the channel to open, but I think I have that fixed by changing 2-tone decode to AF Mute - Open. I have two channels programmed identically except for the On-Duty/Off-Duty switch. While they both turn the alert light on, neither sound the alert beep (it's set to A). Any ideas?

Do you have "Beep" checked? It's in 2-Tone System under Auto Reset?

As for the tone you can have anyone you want.
I have an audio sample player on my page under VX450 series but I don't want to post the url here.
Not sure if I'm allowed too.
It is helpful but I mostly use the "D" tone.

TRNcommLLC. Thanks. Yes, I DO have beep checked under Auto Reset as that is the default. However, I thought that was just the beep at the end of the Auto Reset period as it is for the 180 and 354 series. I would really like to have access to your audio sample player file, can you PM me? If not, I can send you my email address.
Thanks again for your reply, any other ideas?

You know what I just remembered is that the "Alert Mode" should be Mode=Repeat, Repeat=how many times and the Beep=A to G (your choice).

If you have the light working on alert then you must have it set correctly so Alert Mode is the only missing part I can see.

Thanks again, TRNcommLLC,My Alert Mode is set to Single, so Alert Repeat is not selectible. If I change it to Alert Repeat, 2 is the smallest repeat number and the shortest repeat time is 2 seconds. That means it will eat up 2-4 seconds and possibly clip part of the message audio. It's not like the VX-180 where you can select repeat x times and have it repeat x times in a row (in less than a second) without the 2 second Alert Repeat Period in between. I could be wrong, but Single seems the way to go here. If I still don't have it fixed by changing the Alert Mute to Open, I'll give your suggestion a try. Any way I can get to your alert Beep Tone player?
