If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Pardon my ignorance.

I just ordered a VXR-7000 for use on GMRS and am wondering if I can use a controller to make the repeater public unless a certain ani or tone set is received...

Bottom line, I don't mind the public being able to use the repeater, but when myself or a family member wants to use the repeater it would be nice to lock out the public while we use it and then revert back to public when we are done...

I am thinking this could be done between DTMF ANI or just DTMF with an appropriate controller ?

If you setup a repeater of any kind, make, model, as long as you, A) do not use any kind of PL/DPL code, or 2) you use a code then have that code available to the public, then that is what is known as a OPEN repeater.

Even if you have a OPEN repeater, there is no way you are going to "LOCK OUT" everyone for when just you and your family wish to use it.

Also, with this radio, there is controler functions build in.

The only way you are going to get a "family" repeater, is to put a code on it and then do not pass that code around.

Why couldn't he interface community tone board? That way he could set up multiple PL's , and it could be remotely locked out via DTMF at any time or turn on the PL to close it down?

I can do that with my cat 200 controller I have on my CDM 1550's. don't most of the self contained repeaters similar to that one also have accy ports to add outboard controllers?

Yes the VXR-7000 does have an accessory port on the back, and it would seem like a community controller with multiple tones controlled by DTMF would be the ticket for doing it.

I have vertex mobile radios that can be programmed with dtmf ani and with simple dtmf programmable buttons that in theory would be a push of a button to send a dtmf code to switch over the controller to a different set of tones for access....then I just switch channels on my mobile to a second channel that is setup with the new tones.

It would seem to me, at the same time the public tones could be switched to an announcement that the repeater is temporarily closed? Although this could get cumbersome with irritated users keying the announcement over and over just to block my family conversations.....

Anyone have recommendations on a controller?
