It depends entirely on what you wanted to listen to. If you're content with just listening to the local fire departments, you can get away with a basic analog scanner, such as the GRE PSR-100.
If you want to listen to things like ambulance (EHS) dispatching, you will need a scanner that supports trunking, such as the GRE PSR-300 or Uniden BC346XT.
If you want to listen to RCMP, you will need a digital trunking scanner, such as the GRE PSR-500 or Uniden BCD396XT.

thanks for the info yes im more interested in rcmp,in areas amherst,pugwash so i guess those scanners are no doubt very costly but at least i know now ,when i can afford one. thanks again
