Warren Twp. to merge with IFD

Warren Township officials have agreed to merge their fire department in the Indianapolis Fire Department.

Mayor Bart Peterson and Warren Township Trustee Jeff Bennett will announce the merger agreement this morning at Warren Township Fire Station 444, 7403 East 30th St.
Peterson is pushing consolidation of IFD and township fire departments, saying it will save money.

“It’s going to mean millions in savings to taxpayers and enhancements in services to city and township residents,” said Justin Ohlemiller, a spokesman for Peterson.

The Warren Township board voted in favor of the merger at a meeting Tuesday, Ohlemiller said. The City-County Council still has to vote on the merger.

The merger is expected to be complete by July 1.

Last year, the Washington Township Fire Department joined IFD.

What's next? Merging the townships into the City of Indianapolis? They seem to want to merge everything else in Marion County, so that almost seems like the next logical step (there's a twinge of sarcasm there)...
